2008 New York Auto Show: Mercedes Launches Three Diesel SUVs
Mercedes-Benz is unveiling three new sport utility vehicles powered by the world's cleanest state-of-the-art diesel engines at the 2008 New York International Auto Show, open to the public March 21-30, 2008 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.

The impressively fuel-efficient 2009-model diesel SUVs - the ML320 BlueTEC, GL320 BlueTEC and R320 BlueTEC - all come with a new AdBlue exhaust treatment system that meets the most stringent 50-state emissions limits.

What's more, the company's family SUV - the M-Class - features bold restyling for the 2009 model year. Redesigned front bumpers incorporate new headlights with a distinctive step along the lower edge that continues around a larger, lower grill that holds three large silver ribs. Angular air intakes, widely set fog lights and chrome trim help give the 2009 M-Class a broader, stronger face.

A recontoured rear bumper with recessed reflectors and a stainless-steel skid plate that wraps around its dual exhausts also give the new M-Class a broader stance. Larger outside mirrors provide even better visibility.

Inside, door panels now have an upholstered center section, and the seats boast a sportier design and a four-stage power lumber support for the driver's seat. A new four-spoke steering wheel features built-in multi-function buttons and shift paddles.

New advanced-technology features include an in-dash 6-disc DVD changer, hands-free Bluetooth phone system, a high-performance telematics system, and a port for connecting audio devices such as an iPod.

The standard audio system comes with a color display, a double radio tuner, speed-dependent volume control and a keypad for phone numbers and radio frequencies. Optional equipment includes a voice recognition system, a 610-watt digital harmon kardon Logic7 audio system and a rear-seat entertainment system with two eight-inch screens, wireless headphones and an integrated DVD player with dual-source capability.

PRE-SAFE Gives 2009 M-Class Reflexes to Protect Occupants

New standard equipment on the 2009 M-Class, PRE-SAFER is a revolutionary safety system that can actually sense an impending collision before it happens and take measures to protect occupants during those valuable seconds before impact.

The PRE-SAFE system that made its debut on the S-Class automatically tightens the front seat belts before a possible impact, and the front passenger seat moves to a position that can provide better protection. Side windows also close to provide better support for the window curtain air bags. If the system senses an impending rollover, the sunroof also closes.

BlueTEC Diesel SUVs Boast Up To 600-Mile Cruising Range

Whether it's the newly restyled ML320 BlueTEC family SUV, the larger GL320 BlueTEC or the versatile R320 BlueTEC, the diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz sport utilities get 20-30 percent better fuel economy, surprisingly good performance and extremely low exhaust emissions. This latest generation of electronically injected CDI engines is changing consumers' dated perceptions about diesel engines.

The BlueTEC diesels have impressive cruising range up to 600 miles traveling at highway speeds, and these well-appointed SUVs can do all that without sacrificing performance. In addition, V8-like pulling power makes the BlueTEC diesels ideal for towing.

BlueTEC - A Modular Technology

BlueTEC is a modular system that includes an oxidation catalytic converter and a maintenance-free particulate filter as well as new techniques for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions - the last type of exhaust gas that's higher in diesel vehicles than gasoline engines. The BlueTEC diesels use an NOx storage catalytic converter in combination with an SCR catalytic converter and AdBlue injection to lower NOx emissions.

The AdBlue system injects an aqueous urea solution into the exhaust flow, which releases ammonia (NH3), reducing nitrogen oxides to harmless nitrogen and water in the downstream SCR catalytic converter. Just the right amount of AdBlue for a given engine load and speed is injected to get the greatest reduction of nitrogen oxides. Its tank only needs to be refilled every 10,000 miles during routine maintenance intervals.

Early on, Daimler decided to use SCR-based BlueTEC technology to meet the Euro 4 and Euro 5 limits for commercial vehicles, and also to meet even more stringent European emissions standards in the future. All European manufacturers have since followed suit and are now developing technologies based on SCR to ensure compliance with future standards. Since 2005, BlueTEC technology has been used successfully in more than 25,000 Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles, and 3,000 locations in Europe now offer AdBlue.

The way I heard it is that there are huge incentives involved to move the R-class -- like maybe $10K? I never liked the counter-intuitive curve at the rear quarter window.

looks like a "startled pokemon" :)
That's a perfect description!
Doesn't anyone offer a new front fascia to "un-pimp" that thing?

OK, I'll take the hit (start the deboosting).

So the vaunted Bluetecs are finally here. Not the timid first step E320 that didnt meet the stringent emissions requirements, but the real deals.

No details here, but other sites have said that they will boast the same mileage as the current diesels which in the case of the ML is 3 mpg better city and 4 highway. Is this what MBZ means by "impressively fuel-efficient 2009-model diesel SUVs," 18/24?? And that's if they can come in at the same mpg. There is no assurance that once the adblue is added that performance and mpg wont suffer. Then there is the cost. Already a $1000 premium, how much more will this newer set-up cost? Maybe MBZ will eat the cost so as to get the technology out there.

All I want to know is, what is the point? Why is it so important to get these diesels? For towing? Really is that what we need here? If that is the case, praise the GL. That's where the diesel belongs, and I fully support a cleaner diesel being an option on big trucks. In any other application they will be slower, more expensive and too much of a compromise.

Let's say best scenario the ML can come in at the same mileage as the current ML diesel, and the adblue only makes the vehicle $2000 more than the ML350 gas.
You will get...
18/24 mpg (ML350 15/20)
Bin 5 (ML350 Bin 4, ULEV)
EPA greenhouse score 5 (ML350 4)
0-60 8 seconds (ML350 7.9)
$46,825 est. (ML 350 $44,825)

Compare that to the Lexus RX400h
27/24 mpg (RX 350 17/22)
Bin 3, SULEV (RX 350 Bin 4, ULEV)
EPA greenhouse score 7 (RX350 6)
0-60 7.3 seconds (RX350 7.4)
starting at $41,280. (RX350 $37,500)

I'm not trying to be a flamer or a hater. I just do not understand the diesel hype. What is the benefit? It seems marginal compared to gasoline engines (some improvements, some drawbacks, as my comparison shows), and nowhere near the benefits of a hybrid. The RX hybrid betters its gasoline counterpart in every measure (except price) and beats the ML diesel in every measure.

Just tell me, what makes these diesels so great?

You are not a hater but you sound like you work for Lexus. Lexus needs to be defensive.

why don't you post some real world figures!

The Mercedes ML 320 CDI was compared with the Lexus RX 400h and, over the course of the run, the Mercedes was 11% more fuel efficient at 31.0 mpg compared to 27.7 mpg for the Lexus. In a way, this is not surprising, as a hybrid is very efficient around town, but will give almost no fuel saving at high speed (when the electric motors do not operate). More surprisingly, the testers said that the hybrid was only 1.7% more efficient around town at 24.56 mpg compared to 24.12 mpg.

And this is the non bluetec ML320!

kpaxx, I dont usually pay attention to what magazine reviewers say, esp European ones. Yu will always be able to find (at least) one that gives ridiculously low ratings to Japanese cars. They are so not credible. I swear they put bricks in the Lexus trunks and clock them going uphills. Your story originally comes from Autobild, yeah they are not biased at all.

Just for comparison's sake, other (American mag) reviewers are not getting what that UK mag got (big surprise). Forbes got 27 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg overall in the ML diesel, right in line with EPA estinates. Car and Driver observed the ML diesel getting 19 mpg, yes 19 mpg, in mostly city driving. For the RX400h, C&D again, had an average 24 mpg when the journalists were admittedly being leadfooted, and 27 mpg over 4 months of conservative driving.

A more accurate reflection would be to see what real people are getting. Looking at 2007 models, the EPA lists mileage averages from real consumers, the ML320 averaged 23.5 mpg. They also list annual fuel cost $2720, annual CO2 10.1 tons, and I've already posted other figures.
The Lexus came in at 25.4 mpg, fuel cost $1987, 7.1 tons of CO2.

So the hybrid comes out on top, better mileage, less fuel costs, less CO2, and of course we already know that it is cheaper and faster.

So again, I ask, what is the point of this diesel?

Those figures for the diesel look pretty dismal.
The VW Touareg, at 5500 pounds (major porker) with that monster V-10 TDI delivered 30 MPG to most buyers.
24 MPG is terrible in a 3-liter diesel SUV/crossover

My '82 Land Cruiser diesel got better mileage than that, and it was the vintage, non-turbo, low-tech 3.5 liter diesel.

Diesel has proven to be very fuel efficient in all aspects of life from day to day living to racing. Mercedes has worked hard to make diesel burn cleaner and it has.

In Europe diesel is dominant. It's not really hype like how they tried to hype the "hybrid" technology when Honda was the first brand to execute it in a large number.

"All I want to know is, what is the point? Why is it so important to get these diesels? For towing? Really is that what we need here? If that is the case, praise the GL. That's where the diesel belongs, and I fully support a cleaner diesel being an option on big trucks. In any other application they will be slower, more expensive and too much of a compromise."

- It may not have the same BHP as a petrol engine but have you seen figures from the e-class bluetec? go look it up. So little horsepower but the 0-60 time is very impressive. Diesel doesn't mean it's for towing. You're use to seeing diesel in trucks that's why you have that image stuck in your head. It's not important to get these diesels it's just an alternative to your everyday petrol or Toyota's hybrid.

Sure the hybrid name is catchy but the fuel efficiency wasn't as good as they said it was. Mercedes has an S-Class diesel coming out. It lacks the power but for those who want great MPG the S-Class will dominate the LS600HL. The only good thing about the LS6 is the supposed 0-60 time in 5.4 seconds but people who buy an LS could careless about the performance, let's be realistic here. People bought it for it's "fuel efficiency" more than anything else.

Another example:
Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec - 27 mpg city / 32 mpg Lexus GS450H - 22 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

You honestly dont think I looked it up already, did you read my post??? The diesels are slower 0-60.

"You're use to seeing diesel in trucks that's why you have that image stuck in your head."
Please dont try to assume what is in my head. I have seen plenty of diesel cars. Europe began their love affair with them for one reason-low priced diesel fuel. With gasoline engines and esp hybrids, as good as they are, diesels in cars just dont make sense. Diesels in big trucks, which need extra torque for towing, climbing, etc, makes more sense.

"Sure the hybrid name is catchy but the fuel efficiency wasn't as good as they said it was."
In most all hybrid examples the fuel economy is vastly superior when compared to the gasoline engines, unlike in the diesels, which offer less of an improvement over gas engines. Again, look at the figures I posted.

"Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec - 27 mpg city / 32 mpg Lexus GS450H - 22 mpg city and 25 mpg highway."
For the millionth time, the GS intentionally sacrificed some of the fuel efficiency gains for superior performance, to show that hybrids could be used for more than one application. It has 0-60 in 5.2 seconds, almost a second and a half faster than the E320, with lower emissions. (And where do you get 27/32 for the 320, its 23/32)

A big factor not mentioned is the quality of fuel. Because gasoline is a refined product it is more consistent. Whereas diesel is closer to crude, and varies more.
The US diesel is generally not as good as European.
And in the US, the diesel on the east coast is crap.
It comes from that junk oil from Venezuela ... possibly the poorest quality crude in the world.
The west coast is running Alaskan or Canadian oil which is much, much better ... possibly the best quality crude in the world.
I've seen postings in Canada where a Jetta TDI gets a few MPG more from western diesel than it does from Toronto diesel.

And are there any guarantees that the specs are identical in the UK vs. Germany vs. USA ??????

Finally, diesel engines last a lot longer than gas, but they take a lot longer to break in than gas.
My '98 VW TDI started at less than 50 MPG (Canadian) when new, but ramped up to 53 MPG at 50,000 kms (32,000 miles) ... that's combined average, with highway driving at 85 MPH.

And I dont have to make the diesels look bad or the hybrids look good, they are doing that without my help. The numbers speak for themselves.

Fantastic. I didn't know this would happen!

An ML320 Bluetec or GL320 Bluetec sounds very appealing.

Expect significantly better highway mileage than quoted for the ML.
