2009 Audi Q5 - First Drive
Pardon our math, but 5 can represent a greater value than 7. Proof? Audi's upcoming Q5, when read as an algebraic expression or as a force on the car market, equals a higher value than the Q7. We worked it out during a day driving Audi's upcoming compact SUV, and the way we figured it, Q times 5 is so impressive a factor it could very well amount to the most successful Audi launch ever in the Americas.
In real estate, it's all a question of location, but the critical component of the car business is timing, and whereas the full-size Q7 reached market late in the boom-and-bust cycle of that segment, the Q5 will hit these shores next March, when more buyers than ever will be forsaking size for efficiency. And, because the competition for our ever more reticent spending will be so fierce, Value x Quality will become an even more critical factor in the equation for success. In short, the Q5 is good math at the right time.
The first North American Q5 comes powered by a 3.2L FSI V-6 with 270 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, matched to a seven-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox and self-locking center differential that sends drive to all four wheels, normally in a 60 rear/40 front ratio. Should the need arise for more traction, the system automatically shifts power forward, to a maximum of 64 percent, or to the rear, to a maximum of 82 percent.
Pricing has yet to be determined, but Audi says the Q5 with be comparable with its chief rivals, the BMW X3 and new Mercedes-Benz GLK. Several levels of option packages and stand-alone extras and a sportier S-Line model will provide good excuses to spend lots more.

I am driving a 2007 X3 3.0si with the herky jerky automatic transmission. After endless EGS DME updates it is still inconsistent, unpredictable, unsafe and horrible to drive. Audi, please bring the Q5 here now, ASAP! I can't wait any longer!

im assuming its an 07 that you didnt drive it before you bought it, or either you were held at gunpoint and told you had to purchase it seeing as you hate the transmission lol yet out of the other countless choices still bought it, and driving it........or your lieing

bmwdrvr, you are right: I didn't drive it and couldn't because I order it new from Germany. I did drove a demo X3 3.0si before I ordered it that didn't have the problem. Also, the problem is getting worst as time passes. BMW insisted that software updates would improve the driving characteristics but they didn't. This is the last BMW 4 me.

Love the design. Clean lines, even proportions, its really the only entry level lux 'ute that doesnt look like 'wifey's car'. Cant wait to see one up close in black.

agreed! especially with the proportions. I think Audi kind of messed up on the Q7 proportions, while it is an attractive car, it is much too long for its shape, which makes it kind of look like a whale haha. Q5 is much better

LuxCar32....
The X3 is currently and always have been produced in Austria. Before you vomit at the mouth, please confirm your information. With the upcoming redesign of the X3 in 2010, production will shift to the US and Germany.
Is Luxcar32 an Idiot? answer=YES

I have never been a fan of SUVs, especially the giant Suburban/Escalade/Expedition category. The Audi Q7 was more elegant than the aforementioned monsters, but it was still too big, too clumsy, too thirsty and too ugly for my taste.
This new Q5, on the other hand, seems more my cup of tea - smaller on the outside, still roomy on the inside, more graceful, better gas mileage, and a lot prettier.
I hope Audi reconsider their position, and bring the 3.0-liter turbodiesel and the 7-speed S Tronic dual-clutch gearbox to the U.S. asap.

I'd love to get either a Q5 Diesel or a Volvo XC60 Diesel but I doubt New York State will make Diesel Cars legal again.

Not to worry. The new ULSD (ultra-low-sulfur diesel) fuel is legal and available in all 50 states.

If I have to buy a car as expensive as a Volvo or Audi, it would need to be Diesel to justify the expense. No Diesel would be the dealbreaker for me.
