2010 Toyota Avalon details and specs revealed

Toyota will offer the 2010 Avalon in three grades: the standard XL, the XLS, and the top-of-the-range Limited.

The 2010 model is the third generation of the model first rolled out in 1995. A 3.5-liter V6 engine that generates 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque will power all three models.

To get outstanding performance at all engine speeds, Toyota installed the Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i) and a dual-stage variable intake manifold. The engine will be mated to a six-speed automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i). The car is able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds. The car is reported to have a fuel consumption rating of 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

There's something I like about this car's profile and interior, in some weird way. Say what you want about this car, but it serves a very specific and not so small of a niche in the market. Credit Toyota for NOT trying to make it something else. It's not for me, nor most of you, but it's a great car for someone who wants a roomy, quiet, comfortable, well-equiped, reliable and unpretentious car at a reasonable price. In other words, a Buick. Or rather, like Buicks of old, and perhaps of today (although today's Buicks just may be better than the Avalon).

I thought Toyota was ditching the Avalon in favor of a Camry LWB? Also, I never was overly fond of this particular sedan because, at its price tag, one could easily move over to the ES or any number of near-luxury sedans.

not everyone is going after the badge. i personally know millionaires who drove Avalon and Mazda 5.

actually, you might be surprised to find out the average income for an prius driver for that matter.

there are people who are crazy about cars and badge, and more people who aren't.

Well, the last generation Avalon had more technology than the last gen ES, not sure if that's still true or not now.

The Toyota Avalon dares to do what the Hyundai Genesis is too afraid to, proudly proclaiming "I'm a Toyota, this is what I am, this is what I cost."

People who buy the Avalon want Avalons, not something that will do in place of what they really wanted (a la Rolls Royce killer Hyundai).
Avalon is much better to sit in than to look at, just like the rear seat of a 5-series is a much better asset than its looks.

aside from the costlier Land Cruiser, this may be considered the FLAGSHIP of the toyota brand. at least in the u.s.

so in a way, it does what the hyundai azura attempted: provide the most lux for the bux. with the advantage of being A TOYOTA!

at the same time, just swap the logo on the grill and it could easily pass for a Lexus! and cruise as smoothly and quietly, while consuming less fuel! i know of at least one LS owner who keeps the lexus in the garage and uses an Avalon for his daily commute.

the advantage is, toyota toughness and RELIABILITY.

which just about matches that of Lexus, and thus is superior to even the LUXURY CARS of ALL other manufacturers.

toyota long ago discovered the secret of "Quality without cost". (quality of assembly that is, not necessarily of materials except with top line models and the lexus line.)

there is also the further advantage of toyota's REPUTATION.

hyundai MAY someday fulfill their dreams and actually build a car that on technical specs matches a comparable toyota or lexus, and (fat chance) even have as FEW problems when it's 8, 10, or 15 years old.

but they will NEVER have the reputation of also building something like the toyota LAND CRUISER, which for more than half a century has SYMBOLIZED go-ANYwhere and return toughness and reliability.

toyota also has some 'trickle down' glamor and prestige from the LEXUS line.
hyundai so far has been TOO CHEAP to open a second, upmarket brand and sales channel. toyota has invested billions in lexus; its dealer network billions more in fancy stores. hyundai will NEVER get the prestige for its Genesis models, regardless of how good it becomes, as long as there are cheap accents sharing the showroom floors amd service bays.

while toyotas have a separate dealer body than lexus, everyone KNOWS toyotas and lexuses are related. so the glamor rubs off, even to 'lowly' (but still quality built) toyotas.

Dual VVT-i is not too new. I have VVT-i in my 05 Matrix, and the VVTL-i was in the XRS models. Ooooo now I'm impressed. This car is outdated and not a competitor with whoever it is supposed to compete with. Who is the competition anyways? No Honda in this segment, the Nissan Maxima blows this away in comparison, and the Ford Taurus wins hands down against this Yota. Heck they can't even give it a decent set of projector lamps or LED tails.

whelan, there is a difference between VVT-i and DUAL VVT-i.

did you know that Lexus engineers go to as much trouble as to have the engine stop, after the ignition is cut, so as to leave the pistons in the OPTIMUM POSITION for instant starting the next time? they make german engineers seem like slugs in comparison. the 'relentless pursuit' is more than JUST a slogan.

i don't know if this particular feature has trickled down yet to toyota engines, but the company does have a habit of doing that with the advanced tech first used in Lexi.

i see tauruses around all over the place. but i always look twice when i see an Avalon. aside from NOT being as common as rental cars, they just LOOK more upmarket. and everyone KNOWS toyotas rank higher in prestige ACROSS THE LINE than common, cheap fords. REGARDLESS of whether the ford may have a few more horses here and there, or not be so cheap. (how many owners --other than mustang and svo/sho drivers-- EVER whip the whole herd under the hood for stoplight dragraces???)

Toyota Avalon sells, pure and simple. No advertising, hype, bribes or incentives required.

Unlike some other car nations, Toyota try day and night to hide its name in hopes people will think it was manufactured by a bunch of white Europeans.
