The Mercedes-AMG GT R has just arrived in Santa Barbara, California! Before its introduction at the Geneva Auto Show later this year, it has been released with prototype details: a heavily-tuned 4.

0-liter biturbocharged M178 V8 producing 651 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque mated to a 7-speed AMG "SPEEDSHIFT" dual-clutch transmission, promising a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (or 0-62 mph) in 3.1 seconds, up to 200 km/h (about 124 mph) 7.9 seconds later, with the quarter-mile dash being completed in 10.6 seconds at 123 mph and the highest downforce of any currently-available production car at 7,500 lbs of downforce at 171 mph, which beats the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR's 1,710 at 177.

The AMG GT R has also been promised to break these goals: a claimed 7 minutes and 15 seconds at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, and 2 minutes 45 seconds at the VIR Grand East Course, where the Dodge Viper ACR set the track record at 2:40.02.

The new AMG GT R will be one of the fastest Mercedes production vehicles in the world, alongside the SL65 AMG and SLS AMG and their "Black Series" variations, the older SLR McLaren/722 and CLK DTM, and the much older CLK GTR.

Its 651-hp rating beats -- for example -- the Viper's 645, the McLaren 650S' 641, the already-discontinued Porsche 911 GT2 RS' 612, the Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4's 602, the also-discontinued Ferrari 458 Speciale's 597, and the Nissan GT-R NISMO's 592.
