Have you long yearned for a high performance diesel version of a BMW M3? Perhaps one with four-door practicality and a hand-crafted interior decked out with sporting luxury? Yearn no more because just that car is now on sale in the UK. Enter the Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo.

As you’ll have guessed, the Alpina D3 is basically a BMW 3 Series. However, it’s not actually called ‘BMW’: Alpina is a vehicle manufacturer in its own right and the D3 is a ground-up redevelopment that’s so thorough, the car even has a new VIN plate. An Alpina is a re-engineered BMW, not a tuned one.

The D3 is its headline-grabber. Because it is, no less, the fastest production diesel car in the world. How fast is that? Fast: it has a quicker 0-62mph than a Porsche 911 Carrera, and has a higher top speed than a Lotus Evora S. It’s not all about speed, but it forms a big part of its appeal.
