Audi has officially confirmed plans to launch a range-topping SUV which will wear the Q8 moniker.

We have heard endless rumors about a Q8 model and now the firm's research and development chief Wolfgang Durheimer has revealed there will be such a model. Designed as a competitor for the recently unveiled 2014 Range Rover Sport, the Audi Q8 will adopt a coupe-like roofline and is envisioned as an SUV variant of the A8.

It will ride on VW's MLB platform which will underpin several other models such as the next-gen Audi Q7, Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne. In an interview given to Autocar, Durheimer said "we can go bigger than we have with the Q7, and we can all see that this sector is growing."

This announcements comes afters Audi CEO, Rupert Stadler, confirmed Audi will launch an additional 3 sporty SUV models to fill in gaps between the existing Q3, Q5 and Q7 model ranges.
