It was at some point yesterday when looking at the pictures of the X5M and X6M that I thought to myself that these monster SUV's must possess the soul of the devil himself. Who in their right mind needs in excess of 500 horsepower for anything, especially in an SUV that can catapult its occupants to 60 MPH in less than 5 seconds.
The soul of the devil, an interesting thought. One could argue the BMW's or any other car for that matter are not capable of having a soul as they are not actually living objects, but the personality brought to the table by cars like these make the argument of soul a valid one.
Of course BMW's are not the only cars that have soul, most manufacturers make at least one car that possesses what we as enthusiasts would consider soul. Kia has gone as far as to name their newest car the Soul. I am not sure if naming a car the Soul gives it soul, time will sort that one out but we all hold certain cars or manufacturers close to heart given the spirit of cars produced.
This isn't a BMW vs. Lexus vs. ??? question, this is a far deeper discussion into defining a car or entire lineup that has that certain something, the undefinable quality that could be described as soul.
I have driven a lot of cars in my time, there is truly an inherent difference between a car meant solely for basic transportation versus a purpose built car meant to do something special.
The Jeep is a great example of soul, people don't buy Jeep's because of the technical innovation or ergonomic cabin layout. Instead these utilitarian devices are bought for the soul they possess, the ability to ford a stream or crawl up a rocky hillside.
I'll grant you that Jeep probably isn't on the top of most of our lust lists, however it does well to demonstrate the presence of a soul. Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini all have that persona of being alive with soul. The soul is what makes us want a particular car, the "it" factor that you tell your friends about.
Lets do a little soul searching and check in to tell us what car manufacturer infuses the most soul across the entire lineup.
