Major automakers and auto dealers told a Senate committee Tuesday they oppose a bill that would require rental car companies to ground all recalled vehicles before they are repaired.

Both the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers — the trade group representing Detroit's Big Three automakers, Toyota Motor Corp., Volkswagen AG and seven others — and the National Automobile Dealers Association — which represents 16,000 new car dealers — told the Senate Commerce Committee's panel that oversees auto safety that they oppose a bill endorsed by rental car companies that would end the practice of allowing renting unrepaired recalled vehicles.
