In the world of sports cars, there's nothing more desirable right now than the all-new BMW M2 and Ford Focus RS. Really, these two vehicles are spanning generations of automotive enthusiasts and it's very interesting to see how far the reach goes.

Take, for example, my father. He's a 60-something in the portfolio management business and when he was in the kitchen one day he overheard another colleagues discussing how he was fiending over the "all-new Ford RS."

While I wouldn't be surprised to hear that from your latest wannabe Ken Block hot shoe bro, it is different to hear that from a 50+ year old businessman. You know what they say, right?

"Just because there's a little snow on the roof doesn't mean there isn't any fire in the oven."

That said, Autocar put together this odd couple together and tested them both out to find out, well, not too much apparently. They're both excellent and different in their approach and aims. So, what's that mean?

Check out what Autocar concluded, below.

...Where does that leave us? Perhaps inevitably, uncomfortably straddling the fence between two ferociously brilliant cars. The M2 righteously earns its early accolades. It is a marvelous thing: compact, thrusting, deft and true – probably more so than anything else currently branded M. It’s a great ownership prospect, exceeding the RS in scope and most abilities, and lumping in a more debonair level of desirability, too. It’s also something of a bargain, considering. But here’s the thing: I still can’t afford one. I could, however, stretch to the much cheaper Focus – and I like knowing that. I like knowing there’s something that good – by which I mean fast, usable, practical and exciting – within conceivable reach of a more modest budget. It is precisely the democratisation of power, handling, character and approachability that any hatch called mega should be all about. And you know what? Having driven them both, and with only local B-roads to fill up my Sunday afternoons, I wouldn’t think twice or envy the M2 buyer one bit. I like knowing that most of all.
