The Cadillac CTS-V has been one of those products that really has progressed quite nicely. If you ask me, its second-generation was clearly deserving of an Most Improved Player award. That car was fantastic.

And if you ask me, I would of had a second-generation CTS-V over the then BMW E60 M5 and then Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. The V just was better, plain and simple. But the debut of the F10 M5 and all-wheel drive E63 put a damper on those spirits.

So, what was Cadillac to do? Take the bull by the horns, that's what.

When the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 debuted with a ridiculous 650 horsepower supercharged V8, not only did I salivate at the Corvette's prospects, a light bulb went off. This would be the next-gen CTS-V's powerplant.

Sure enough, that's what happened and here we are today. So, what's the verdict? Well, if you read Autocar's first impressions from Road America, it certainly sounds mightily impressive.

For me, the most critical part of the review is how good the vehicle brakes consistently. Road America is a BIG, FAST and SCARY track. Cars get beaten up on it and to hear the CTS-V's stock set up worked without flaws is staggering.

According to Autocar the M5 and E63 are more precise handlers though I can't imagine that being entirely true. Why? Well, they're all 4,000 pound luxury sedans with monster engines doing their best to stay on track.

I'll let you know the real deal when I get my turn...

Should I buy one?:

If numbers are your thing, the CTS-V beats a BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 in both power output and top speed. It'll accelerate from a standstill to 62mph in less time, too. That said, while being bigger and brasher is fine, the CTS-V can't match the handling precision of its German competition.

To many, though, it’ll be that unmistakable American style that makes the CTS-V appealing. It has the presence of a body builder in a tailored suit and has the performance to match its looks.
