FRANKFURT -(Dow Jones)- German auto maker Daimler AG (DAI.XE) wants to overtake rivals BMW AG (BMW.XE) and Audi AG (NSU.XE) to become the world's leading manufacturer of luxury cars by 2020, Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in an interview for the Saturday edition.

"It's clear that we want to be the number one premium car manufacturer in product, sales, brand and profitability," Zetsche is quoted as saying.

In 2014, Daimler expects to sell 1.5 millions cars of the Mercedes-Benz brand alone, and it aims to sell 1.6 million Mercedes-Benz cars by 2015, the report says.

Daimler hopes to launch 10 new models over the next four years, the report says, and plans to expand capacity in strong growth regions, particularly Asia and North America. Zetsche is optimistic about further growth in the automotive market.
