Daimler Losing Faith in Smart?

Looks like Smart is losing the confidence of its German owners.

The wounded Daimler corporation is frustrated with Smart's failure to produce real profits. Smart's fate will hinge on two major projects: one is an all-electric version of the ForTwo, and the other is the more accessible ForFour (which will be coming back after a hiatus). Smart will try to regenerate public interest with a demonstration electric in the next year.

When the Smart came out a decade ago, it was radical/cute/interesting.

No so much anymore. It isn't affordable, it really isn't all that economical, so what does it have going for it?

Worst Basic warranty, 2 years or 24,000 miles.
Worst Rust warranty, 4 years or 50,000 miles.
Worst drivetrain warranty, 2 years or 24,000 miles.
Free maintenance: not available
Roadside: not available
Lousy EPA mileage estimates for a 70 HP vehicle.
Capacity 2 passengers.
Cheaper more than 2 passenger and better alternative vehicle in all above categories.
