You know the auto industry is changing when a dealership's "going out of business" sale makes national headlines.

From CNN...

"The clock is ticking for Ray O'Bryhim: he has less than a week to sell his last 40 cars.

His ads for Pohanka Chrysler-Dodge scream, "Everything must go, regardless of profit!"

On June 9, his franchise to sell new Chryslers and Dodges will be terminated, along with those of almost 800 other Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealers nationwide. This comes as a result of Chrysler's announcement last month that they would shrink their dealer base in the United States."

Let's not get too teary eyed for the dealers. These are still the same people that nickel and dime you to death during the negotiation, cheerfully refuse to provide warranty service, and quote you $120 for a repair until they have your car torn apart and its really $480. Who else does this to you for "only" $85 per hour? (sorry, its our standard rate).

Its easier to deal with Vinnie and Louie down at the docks than a car dealer.

From my experiences its almost always the customer the "nickels and dimes" the dealer. Most customers have no loyalty whatsoever and after a couple of hours with a knowledgeable salesman would purchase from another salesman just to save a couple hundred bucks on a 30K purchase. This could all be remedied by just making everyone pay sticker and in turn would be recouped through trade-in.

How do you figure it'd be recouped through trade-in? The trade-in is where you're likely to get screwed the most. They're going to offer you the lowest reasonable amount, and turn around and make a big profit on it.

Anyone that pays sticker for a vehicle is a moron, plain and simple.

Guys, what I'm saying is that if all people were to pay "sticker" for new cars, and "retail (according to nada book or blue book) for a used car. The those guides would be accurate in reflecting the trade in prices and nobody would feel screwed. Basically if everyone paid the same price going in everyone would get offered the same price coming out. I think it should totally be regulated.

I do agree that haggling is unfair, because too many variables like race and gender unfortunately come into play. Supply and demand should only apply to those that 'choose' to pay extra, not feel forced to.

This also sounds like a carmax model of business (a bit)...which I fully support.

However what they really should do is eliminate dealerships all together and allow the consumer to buy direct. Much more efficient and profitable for both producer and consumer. Especially with the companies downsizing.

People pay sticker for vehicles all the time. It just depends what kind of car it is. Is it reasonable to save $1,000 on a new car sure. Is it reasonable to ask a dealership to spend time with you, tell you about the car, show you all of the features... then walk out on them to save $1,250 at another dealer... NO!

Think about this with any other service. There is nothing like the car industry. People have so many negative connotations when it comes to auto dealers.. and yes some guys are total pricks... but there are plenty of places who are just trying to make some money.

How resonable was it that the auto dealer where I went, put a sticker on his car saying "discount and sale" for a brand new CX-7 and had it marked $5000 more than I actually found the exact same car online.

The great thing was I printed out the online price and when we came down to price and he said he couldn't go any lower than $2000 difference on the sticker and that I should probably look at somthing else, I handed him the piece of paper with the VIN number of the car we were discussing on it and he got quiet.

Best car buying experience ever. Felt great to screw over one of those snake oil salesmen vs finding out I just spent the better part of a day negotiating to spend $3000 over invoice.

Why not. When I priced my deck I did that, when I had to have my railing rebuilt I did that, when I had to buy a new water heater...I did that. Its called getting a quote and its basic business. Why should the dealership be different? And heck when I did that stuff, they came to my house vs me going out there, so they put even more effort out than a dealership had to.
By the way, concerening your problem with the $1250...why didn't they match price? If they really wanted to be competitive and really cared about the customer...why wouldn't they match a competitors price?

I think it's funny that no one touched on this little nugget - all of these dealerships dying is bad for consumers. Fewer dealers means less competition and higher prices, not to mention more expensive parts and service. For the people here that are crying about dealers now - wait 5 years. It's going to be a whole new industry.
