General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG have asked the federal government to provide $500 million to help develop advanced batteries needed to power electric vehicles, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a request submitted by automakers last month. The document, sent to a White House technology adviser, estimated that the U.S. has fallen behind Japan in developing batteries for fuel-efficient automobiles and may suffer economically if government assistance for research isn't made available, the Journal said.
