It has been years since Subaru promised to come up with green technology that includes diesels and hybrids US customers still have to see just one example of alternative fuel, boxer-powered Imprezas, Foresters or Legacys.
However, the carmaker says that besides bringing a new diesel engine Stateside by 2011 or 2012, it hopes to launch a hybrid at just about the same period. Subaru planned to license and adapt the Hybrid Synergy Drive system of Toyota for its present drivetrains, as earlier reported. The move proved to be difficult and time-consuming. With the latest CAFE proclamation that carmakers must average 35.5mpg by 2016, it looks like the carmaker is ready at last to fulfill its promise.
