For The Second Time In One Year UK Bans Lexus Advertisement As Misleading

A national press advertising campaign for a Lexus hybrid four-wheel drive car has been banned after it claimed it was "perfect for today's climate".

Viewers complained that the ad misleadingly implied that it caused "little or no harm" to the environment.

The press ad, for the Lexus RX 400h, made the claim: "perfect for today's climate. (And tomorrow's) ... Driving the world's first luxury hybrid SUV makes environmental, and economic, sense ..."

Four complaints were made to the Advertising Standards Authority that the claims were misleading because "they implied that the car caused little or no harm to the environment and gave a misleading impression of the car's CO2 emissions in comparison with other vehicles".

That's so stupid. I wonder if they banned Audi's newest A4 ad too then?? It stated it was the fastest in it's class, when in reality, it's the slowest !

I would believe that if those same ads appeared in the UK, they would have been deemed misleading as well.

You would think Lexus would have learned their lesson the first time their ads were banned.

Maybe they didnt realize someone would actually give a sh*t and complain about it.

I'm going to complain that BMW isn't the ultimate driving machine. I think that Ferrari is. So they can't make that claim.

Apparently Lexus has hard time doing their dirty work in UK. They assumed it will be as easy to fool everybody there, as it was in US. I guess they were wrong with that assumption.

Here is one to get the flame wars going:

Isn't Lexus calling itself a premium brand misleading itself?

"Four complaints were made to the Advertising Standards Authority..."

By no means is it a great ad, but it's a shame that any four hypersensitive and apparently unemployed, friendless yahoos with nothing better to do can have so much sway.

Of course the ad is misleading.... where it says "Lexus," it should read "Toyota."

I'm getting sick of hearing this same baseless argument against Prius and hybrids in general. Lexus hybrids use nickel metal hydride batteries which are of non lead-acid type and are nowhere near as toxic as conventional lead-acid and Nickel Cadmium batteries. The entire auto industry uses over million metric tons of lead where over 90% are used for the standard batteries, should we boycott the entire auto industry as well?

Toyota pays hundreds per battery pack to completely disassemble, recycle and even neutralize the alkaline before it reaches the landfill. They are environmentally sound, and as they continue to spend millions in research to improving Li-ion battery technology, it will actually benefit us in the future as our use of lead-acid/nickel batteries will diminish... we should actually be thanking Toyota for what they are trying to do.

Did anyone notice that it says ECONOMIC CLIMATE?

"But the ASA said the ad implied that the vehicle's emission rate was low in relation to all vehicles and that readers were likely to understand that "the car caused little or no harm to the environment"."

1. It mentions NOTHING about global warming or the environment.

2. It mentions NOTHING about ANY competitors, or "CARS" in general.

Next they're going to ban ads that say a car is "fun to drive" because that would grossly overestimate its fun-to-drive factor in relation to other cars in the industry and mislead consumers into thinking that it is more fun to drive than other cars.

It says nothing about climate... it says ECONOMIC climate.

Implying that it is eco-friendly and gas-saving. It's not like it is saying it will make rain and snow fall from the sky. WTF!

Ah well, the US banned the end of the song 'Physical' by Olivia Newton John because it showed 2 guys holding hands.

I think the UK is a lot more liberal about culture than the US. A ton of songs, films etc get edited for the US market to avoid offense.

I doubt the general UK populace is this stupid. German fans complaining in an anti-Japanese market. If this ad is misleading, then every diesel commercial claiming they reduce oil dependence is even more misleading (unless its a German ad).

Building these so called green cars leaves a bigger carbon footprint then a regular car because the batteries have to be flown to 3 continents to have them manufactured. BIG, carbon trail don't you think? Hybrids are about politics, not the environment!

rawbux,
It's a good thing Mercedes will actually pull 3 continents together so their batteries will technically be manufactured on 1 continent. I'm sure the S400 hybrid's batteries eliminate the carbon footprint altogether.

When a car is manufactured in Europe, where is the metal from? Where does the oil to produce plastic panels and rubber tires come from? How about the glass?

enthusiast,
They're not quite as efficient as the Germans, who are saving the world one V10/V12 2-seater at a time.

the difference is that the V10s and V12s you speak of don't pretend to be something they're not...they are supremely powerful cars that require lots of gas.

whereas the lexus hybrids use huge amounts of raw materials and get mediocre mileage, yet they claim to be 'green' when they are no such thing. hypocrisy.
