While automakers tend to go a bit bonkers when something special reaches an anniversary, I don't think you'll see the same reaction from a brand that tends to be a bit more low key. Remember the hubbub surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911?

Honda is going to take the high road with the 40th birthday of its Accord. Annually one of the best selling products in the US market, the Accord is an important vehicle. Much like the Ford F-150 and the Accord's rival, the Toyota Camry, these are the products people need to deliver a variety of fronts.

The Accord has been a cheap all-around car for a long time and it's appropriate we recognize how great of a vehicle it's been. While I admit I am not so keen on the earlier models, I will tell you today that there's no question that the 2016 model year product is seriously impressive. Though I drove a $35,000+ Touring model that had the kitchen sink thrown in, you can slip into one for about $23,000 no problem.

What truly blew my mind was how the V6-equipped Touring I drove felt like the Acura Legend. After one week with the car I realized that unless you really need all-wheel drive — and you really don't (just get proper winter tires) — you can skip the A brand. The Accord is powerful, comfortable, well equipped and while it may not be perfect it's a damn good effort that should last you plenty of time.

Having driven a Civic for a number of years, and family members who are repeat owners, I can attest to the fact these vehicles are trouble free. Though it may not light my fire, there's no question it's hard to argue against a product that checks all the boxes for the everyday person.

For that, we salute you. To another 40 years with the Honda Accord!
