Hot News: New BMW Z4 Joins the Hard-Top Fold
Feast your eyes on BMW’s all-new sports car: the Z4. Due to go on sale at the end of next year, the Porsche Boxster rival is being given a fresh look, with a bulging bonnet hump, larger twin kidney grilles and wide stance.

The original ‘flame surfacing’ styling, pioneered by former BMW design chief Chris Bangle, is still present, but it’s been toned down with a simpler, more athletic shape.

And the newcomer has a big trick up its sleeve: a folding metal roof. This retractable steel top will be similar in design to that on the company’s latest 3-Series Convertible, and will be offered alongside a traditional soft-top model. The Z4 will also feature a new range of powerful engines, including a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six. There’s also the possibility of diesel power – which would be a first for the range.

I'm so glad they didn't screw this up like the new 7 series -- this is one fine looking car. Bonus points for offering the hardtop convertible as well.

That thing looks horrible, and "the big trick"? You mean the same one MB pulled off 11 years ago with the SLK, THAT trick??

And I think it's a bad idea offering 2 tops, it segments the market just like the Miata and Sebring offerings. Make it carbon fibre and be done with it.

I didnt know Mercedes invented the hardtop convertible.....maybe you want to tell Mitsubishi that since in 1995 they made a 3000gt spyder with a hardtop....yes before the SLK, than you can go to Ford and tell them there Skyliner must have imaginary since it had a hardtop convertible back in the 1950's, but hey your right that is something the Mercedes Slk started just 11 years ago...how foolish of everyone

ummm...the Z4 is in the same category as the SLK...the 3000GT isn't, hence the reason this is no "big trick". And nowhere did I say MB invented anything, see how foolish you sound?

My point is that BMW is finally getting around to using a hardtop in their small 2-seater yet MB did it over a decade ago.

Okay Mercedes didn't invent the hardtop convertible and BMW's new Z4 is just as ugly as the current one. It will go like stink but it still won't win any beauty contests.

Youre right. They didnt. The Americans did half a century ago. Mercedes did however make the first practical and reliable FOLDING metal roof about 12 years ago

Good, they got rid of that dorky A-pillar "extension" crease in the front quarter panel.

No. I wish they would at least put that in this article. It's a rendering from someone.
