We reported last week on the Genesis sedan. Citing an article published in the August 2008 C&D we stated that perhaps they had gotten it wrong in stating that the Genesis sedan was on par with the Lexus sedans. Agent 001 chimed in to state that while the Genesis sedan is good, it still wasn't Lexus beating material. Yet.
Here we have another attempt to go against the big boys, this time Infiniti with the new Genesis Coupe. Looking very similar to the G37, Hyundai is bringing to market a car that when optioned correctly will have a 310 HP V6 in a rear wheel drive platform priced like a Mustang, but styled and equipped like the more expensive G37.
Hyundai is serious about its move upmarket, and I have to tell you I respect their determination. As I see it, every time a competitor lobs one over the fence into premium territory, the premium makers must step up their game even further. That equates into a win win situation that we as the consumer enjoy. Ten years ago people would have laughed at the thought of a Hyundai capable of accelerating to 60 MPH in 6 seconds or less, but the Genesis sedan has been tested at 5.6 seconds. Those who doubt I would caution to watch out, Hyundai means business and for their first strike at the premium makers I would say that they at least drew blood.
Time and testing will ultimately be the judge and juror on the Genesis Coupe, but based on pictures and initial tests I would say that they have the makings of a winner on their hands.
Should BMW be worried, their nearest competitor is the 1-Series, and as previously discussed that car can get pretty expensive when you are liberal with the options. If the G37 was Hyundias target, the biggest competitor to the G37 is the 3-Series coupes, cars which can get very expensive when optioned up. Options I would say Hyundai is going to include at bargain basement pricing. Does the Genesis Coupe at least have enough going for it to make Infiniti and BMW sit up and take notice?
I think pieces are at least in play, will this first attempt unseat the reigning champs, probably not, will they at least be put on notice, absolutely.
What do you think?
