Man Jailed For Going 166 MPH In Scotland

A motorcyclist was jailed for nine months yesterday after clocking 166mph, the fastest speed recorded on a Scottish road.

Neil Purves, 27, a hairdresser, was also banned from driving for five years after being caught on the A702 near West Linton, Peeblesshire, this year.

The court was told that Purves, who has since sold his Suzuki GSX-R 1000 motorcycle, covered 0.7 of a mile in 16 seconds. Police carrying out speed checks stopped Purves after they were alerted by the high-pitched whine of the motorcycle engine....

9 months?? That sheriff should be shot. If he wasn't putting any other motorist in danger then what's the problem? People go skydiving and that's perfectly legal so why can't a man have 2 min of his fun with the cost at his own risk. Maybe a day or two in jail if you really wanna teach others a lesson but 9 months is retarted.

Do these people realise that there are actual criminals on the road that need to be jailed? Murderers, robbers, child molesters...all are walking very confident on the road, yet courts fill jails with people who speed or smoke weed. Nice. Talk about the law choosing its battles. I'm not condoning what the dude did, because as a motorcycle rider mysef, I know what the potential for distaser is at that speed (I recently lost a coworker who passed away in a single vehicle high speed motorcycle crash on public roads).

If he was going 166 and the cops were standing still doing radar, you would think he would just keep going. Why slow down when your doin 166! Just keep goin, get off the highway somewhere, hideout for a few, change your gear and drive home nice and steady. What a loser.

Naagh. Not really. On a 1000cc superbike, you can be doing 166 in an instant. From a standing start you can hit 150 in 10 secs. And it is very tempting. It was probably just a lapse of thought - having fun. I've been there. Just never got caught.
