The current move of the German carmaker Mercedes-Benz is to install stop-start technology on its entire engine lineup. Although they refuse to put a timeline on this plan, the carmaker says that this is top priority for them and that they are pushing ahead and they may even overtake BMW if all goes according to plan.
The stop-start technology will be introduced for the very first time on a 4-cylinder gasoline powerplant, the 181bhp turbocharged E200 CGI, beginning the middle of 2010, although the technology’s performance on the automatic versions is not yet as they were hoping for. Mercedes is looking forward to having the problem solved with installing stop-start in automatics by 2011. After that the stop-start technology will be fitted on all V6 and V8 versions which come with automatic gearboxes as standard feature. The problem is not fitting the stop-start system to the engine and gearbox, but achieving smoothness of the start.
