Mercedes boss confirms full turbocharged lineup within 3 years
The push by governments around the world for stricter emissions regulations for new cars has all carmakers, from mainstream makes like Toyota and General Motors all the way up to exclusive brands like Mercedes-Benz and even Ferrari, working on new methods to clean up their act.

One of the easiest methods of reducing emissions and improving fuel economy is to downsize an engine’s displacement but this often comes at the cost of performance.

There are a number of ways to draw more power from an engine but one of the most cost effect and reliable methods is super- or turbocharging.

I'm currently driving a 2008 Passat 2 litre turbo -- my first turbo ever. So far so good. plenty of power and no turbo lag. The seats are more comfy in this Passat than in my previous 2004 A6 (and more rear legroom also). I guess turbos have come a long way since early reliability problems with turbo bearings coking up etc. I expect Mercedes to use some expensive high-performance alloys for their turbo blades and boast about it. Too bad a GLK turbo was not available when my A6 lease ran out.

...(crickets chirping)

Funny, if this was Lexus or Infiniti announcing it, German fans would be in an uproar claiming they're copying BMW, yet MB gets a pass.

Lemme guess: MB has been planning this for MANY YEARS!!!

I would agree that MB has been planning this for many years. They have had the KDI engine in the pipeline for some time.

KDI stands for Kmopressor Direct Injection. Essentially, it is a supercharged engine with direct injection. Nothing special. The standout feature, however, is that it uses an electromagnetic valve train. This allows engineers to do WHATEVER they want with valve timings. This means the same engine could run Otto, Atkinson, or Miller cycle.

Mercedes probably determined in house that they could get better fuel economy out of a turbocharged engine, so they ditched the Kompressor (supercharger) aspect of the KDI program. If I had to guess, I'd say that they will use a VGT turbo in conjunction with the electromagnetic valve train and run the engine with a Brayton cycle.

What will this mean to us? Engines with ~125hp/liter of output, substantial low end torque, decent fuel economy, and a stupid expensive engine.

Look for a 1.6liter I4 for the C class, a 2.5L V6 for the E class, and a 3.0L V6 shared between the E and S class.

'Look for a 1.6liter I4 for the C class, a 2.5L V6 for the E class, and a 3.0L V6 shared between the E and S class. '

All those size engines are already available for European buyers. We can get a 1.8 litre E class and a 2.8 litre S class as well.

Doesn't MB have a history of using turbos or superchargers since the 1920s?

turbos and super chargers are 2 separate things. Not to mention that primarily AMG only uses this technology.

MT is right on this one. The 500K was an example of an early Mercedes supercharged engine. Since then, Mercedes has been using turbos in their diesel cars since the M615. In addition, smaller motors from Mercedes have been regularly turbocharged for quite some time now, not just the big 'ol AMG ones.

the concept of using them across an entire line is rarely if ever done. It was BMW themselves that denounced their use only a few years ago, yet the twin turbo is making it's way into almost every model...MB is now announcing the same thing.

This would be akin to say, Toyota announcing a complete hybrid lineup...followed by Audi announcing it a year later.

Bulldogz is right. I too remember when BMW said that turbo and supercharging was not a proper way of making power (when MB started supercharging everything) and that BMW wouldn't use it.
That being said I do really enjoy driving the 335i. It definitely moves. Now if I could only get that engine the the last generation car I'd be a happy man.

Historically seen Mercedes first used superchargers for one simple reason: mountain racing. It was already known in the early 1920s that engines produce less power at higher altitudes and through the use of a supercharger (forced induction) an engine could sustain the same level of horsepower or actually produce more. Another positive "side effect", if you will, of superchargers was the added torque. In time we came to associate some of Mercedes' greatest racing cars with this technology. SS, SSK, SSKL and a line of supercharged performance cars in the 1930s such as the 500K and 540K as well as the mighty 770K.

MB parts as expensive as is, won't be cheap to replace... that's why I don't like turbo chargers, just one more thing that can break.
