The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants to implement new rules to speed adoption of noncontroversial auto industry regulations.

In a notice posted Tuesday, the auto safety agency wants authority to approve "routine and noncontroversial rules by reducing the time and resources necessary to develop, review, clear and publish separate" regulations without a full public comment period before finalizing the rules.

NHTSA says it would not use "direct final rule procedures for complex or controversial issues." But if NHTSA determines regulations "are not controversial and therefore unlikely to receive adverse comment" it could finalize changes or new rules in a matter days after announcing the regulation.
