Last week at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Mazda took the covers off the 2009 Mazda MX-5. Mazda made no changes to the architecture or the powertrain of the new MX-5 but according to the model’s program manager Takao Kijima, the next-generation Mazda MX-5 could have a hybrid or diesel engine to increase the roadster’s fuel-economy.
Kijima said that Mazda is looking to cut the weight of the MX-5 by 10 percent and is looking at a hybrid or diesel powertrain only if the performance of the car is not affected.
