The Tesla Roadster, excluding it electric drivetrain, is less practical than a lot of other sports cars available for sale. For one it does not have sufficient space for both rear passengers and luggage. However, the upstart carmaker has every intention to go beyond the Roadster and Model S sedan, and it is currently aiming at the Porsche 911 Turbo.
There were initial speculations that the carmaker was planning to pattern its future products on the Model S platform, beginning with a base model to a full-fledged GT, it has been mum about details of its sports cars of the future. However, some details did slip and what can be gathered from the slippage is that the new Tesla sports car will be a 2+2 with 10 percent more space for rear-seated occupants and 50 percent more luggage space in contrast to the 911. It will also come with a an all-wheel-drive system. Since it will not be bound to the drivetrain, there will be more freedom to style the car. The coupe of the future is greatly dependent on the success of the Model S, but if all goes well, it could be as soon as 2012 or 2013 when a GT model can come out of the company’s production lines.
