Nissan has reconfirmed its commitment to an ongoing GT-R development programme, with a model replacement cycle in place that should see an R36 hit the streets by 2013 at the latest.

PistonHeads was at Nissan’s Nurburgring Technical Centre earlier this week, when VP of global product planning Andy Palmer paid a flying visit to show his support for the GT-R programme lead by Kazutoshi Mizuno.

It was Andy’s first meeting with the Japanese GT-R ‘away team’ at the Nurburgring and, speaking informally to the assembled engineers and support staff, he spoke warmly of their achievements and reaffirmed Nissan’s commitment to the GT-R project.

My $0.02: Nissan will lightweight the GT-R: smaller engine with a higher specific power (I'm thinking sequential turbo system), CFRP used on non-essential body pieces such as the hood and trunk, lighter exhaust, CF suspension components (ala ZF's new monotube dampers), CF driveshafts, smaller battery (Lithium Phosphate), etc. In other words, I think they'll figure out how to get the weight down to ~3300lbs from its current ~3800lbs.

Dream engine: twin sequential turbo V6, direct injection, electro mechanical valve train, putting out ~600bhp and a power curve to die for

Dream transmission: infinitely variable hydraulic transmission (ala Artemis)

A hydraulic transmission would be sweet, especially if they worked in some nitrogen cylinders (which I highly doubt they will)

A new front end design is really the most important thing it needs. Interior, being very high quality, also looks kinda dated. It'll also be great to offer 'Cuoio'(beige) color of leather.

In other words, they couldn't prove their biases wrong any other way so they came out and admitted their bias.

Porsche racing wins are not a very good measure of a stock car. These Porsches are prepped for racing. Could I not compare the Corvette's prestigious international racing history in the much the same way? I don't because I know those aren't stock cars and you will never see those levels of performance from the factory. The only race I care about is the one that uses actual stock cars and is held by many as the ultimate test... the ring, and as that lies the GT2 still holds a 7:31 and Carrera GT a 7:28.71 ... a full 2 seconds behind this Nissan that you honestly believed cheated even with a couple video proofs otherwise...

Nissan doesn't need to do anything mechanical or invent any new technology or retune and refine the current ones. This car is already superior to anything out there at a porky 4000lb. Just slap a BMW logo on it and call it a day. This will shut EL34 up and the world will be a better place to be.

I disagree. To me, the GT-R represents the edge of technology: a twin turbo V6 built by one of the greatest engineering houses in the world, Cosworth, cutting edge aerodynamics, a highly advanced AWD system...

An advanced hydraulic transmission would be a big step in the right direction IMO. The car is already characterized as "soul-less" so they've got nothing to lose on that front. The hydraulic transmission would reduce vehicle weight (hydraulic trannys can be enormously power dense), while allowing for stiffer body and better under body aerodynamics (no need to accommodate for drive shafts). There would be no time losses to "shifting" as there would be no shifting, no sudden shocks to the car (helps with durability), and Nissan could come up with some sort of a nifty lever to control gearing (push forward to move to shorter gears pull back to move to longer gears).

Very interesting. Considering what they pulled on the initial try. I can't imagine the next version, being able to refine the current platform. The hardest part is done, the initial chassis.
