Porsche will share Panamera and 911 platforms with other Volkswagen brands

In a recent interview with Autocar, new boss Michael Macht admitted that Porsche is prepared to share the Panamera and 911 platforms with other brands from the Volkswagen Group.

“Porsche needs to become a strong pillar of VW, as well as having its own production and research and development capabilities. It is important to ?use synergies as well as having independence,” said Macht.

Apart from the Cayenne’s V6, Porsche will not use other engines from Vw because the engine development is a core value for the German manufacturer, according to Macht sayings. As you may know already Porsche is also thinking of its first electric car, but this is currently far away because it appears that the current rechnology doesn’t fit with Porsche requirements. The technology used by the Audi e-Tron Concept could be the solution.

THIS CANNOT HAPPEN. I bought a 911S because it is an icon and unique. if there is a VW variant running around, Porschephiles everywhere will be in an uproar

Completely agree. I bought a 997 Turbo for the same reason. The idea of that platform, more than the Panamera's, being shared by some mass-production VW product is not a good one. Looks like VW may tear down the jewel-like quality of what used to be Porsche's independence.

...right, because the 924 was such an iconic part of their stable? None of their cars seem to stay (944/968 and 928)around like the 911.

First it was the Boxster aka "poor man's 911" then it was the Cayenne. C'mon, Porsche was almost bankrupt AGAIN. The days of them being independent and out of reach for most people is long gone unfortunately.

they weren't nearly bankrupt because the cars weren't selling, they overextended their finances by taking loans trying to expand and buy VW.

Platform and technology sharing are nothing new between VW, Audi, and Porsche; notably the Porsche 914 & 924, the Tiptronic transmission, VW Golf-Audi A3/TT, VW Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7, etc. Sharing platforms reduces costs, and spreads development cost over many more units, thus reducing prices per unit. It's a good business decision.

It could be a bad thing, but then again we don't have all the details. they say they were making a VW version of the 911 or Panamera, they said Porsche would share the platforms with other VW brands. that could mean a more expensive Lamborghini sedan based on the Panamera, or a smaller, sportier Bentley coupe/convertible based on the 911. they didn't necessarily say they would use the Porsche platforms for cheaper cars, they might use them as the basis for more expensive cars.

i cant even imagine what they would use the 911 platform for. the panamera platform sounds slightly more realistic, perhaps because it has similarities to the cayenne. but i dont see rwd in audi or vw's future.

i thought the same thing. the Panamera kind of makes sense, but what other way could you use the 911's rear-engine platform, except for a 911? But than again, imagine a slightly larger turbocharged AWD 911 dressed as a Bentley inside and out... it could work, if you forget that the 911 turbo and current Bentley GT are already similarly priced... or this could be a tipping of the hand: perhaps the next 911 will be mid-engined, making a nice cost-effective platform for the next Audio R8 and entry-level Lamborghini coupe.

It seem unlikely another brand would use the 911's platform, the panamera boxster/cayman are almost certain. It would give Audi a rear wheel drive platform for a sedan, a midengine sportscar, and maybe lamborghini a suitable base for its sedan. I will be the only person that thinks this but that to me is what makes the R8 that much less impressive I know its a version of a car that has already been proven highly compentent, not its own original creation honestly with a proven platform and engineering how can you not get a car right.......

Doesn't matter. No VW will be as precise and good as a Porsche. VW-Audi uses platforms and/or parts for Lamborghini no one else talks crap. What about Bugatti? But if VW uses Porsche parts everyone is in disbelief and/or looks down on the brand. You know how many companies contract out their stuff to other companies? Stuff behind the scenes many of you normal consumers don't know.

FYI---bentley is another VW brand. read the headline. i don't see any problem with a more sporting bentley sharing the platform of the panamera. do you guys?
