SPIED: Corvette Z06 SS/Blue Devil

Just this week there were reports circulating that Chevrolet’s 600hp Corvette would be called the SS, and now images of a red pre-production test mule of that very car have surfaced.

The diligent guys over at Autoblog managed to find these images on an Internet forum, which reveal a huge liquid to liquid intercooler mounted above the engine and a new positive displacement supercharger siting where the alternator should be.

Under the hood’s camo gear is likely to be a new power bulge instead of the rumoured air-scoop, while the front-quarter panels, which were also taped up, are likely to feature new side vents. General Motors’ Bob Lutz confirmed that the car is in development and is due by mid 2009 as a 2010 model.

Yea, his dad is a die hard Chevy fan and has been buying his cars [for the family] from the same dealer in PA (I believe).

So he went in to order his 07 ZO6 loaded up and all and left thinking everything was in place. Weeks, months went by and nothing. More months...so he calls and they can't find his order. Basically it got "dropped on the floor" and was never processed. Well, being that the dealership messed up they went straight to Bowling Green and got the people there into it.

So in the end he's getting on of the first loaded SS' on the East Coast.....wait for it.....for the Z06 price.

Loyalty pays my friends....oh does it pay. Like I said, we are going to have lots of fun.

i would have to agree the corvette interior is pretty low rent, but given its performance, and the cars its compared to, its obvious that at that price cost had to be cut somewhere.....mags compare the base, and zo6 corvette to cars that cost 2,3,4 times more than they do, so as a whole package and for the money its fine, as far as the gm product comment, one they dont make the cavalier and 2, not all "gm" products have poor interior quality and ill give gm credit they are the only american company that seems to be focusing on improving both styling and interior quality "and doing it", and not just improving styling. so despite the interior quality the ss will be in its own class, as are other vettes because of price vs. performance.

Nothing special looks like any other vette. Vettes are nice but i don't like the interior, much like any other Domestic versions of a supercar.

Haha I get - boost because I said the interior of vettes and other domestic 'supercars' aren't nice. Come on now guys, we all know the materials aren't the greatest and the designs aren't the most exciting. I never said the car wasn't a great performer.

Agent001 will be getting some angry emails soon...I expect these pictures will be gone by tomorrow.

For those that haven't read Chewy's article, it says the person who took these photos has been fired from his job at the shipping company that transported the Corvette. GM is approaching various sites requesting the images be removed, AutoBlog already has.

The man who took the photos is also in prison.
He will probably face charges to do with Corporate Theft or Industrial Espionage or similar, and breaking of contract between GM and the shipping company.

Hey Vette's are what they have always been--great performance machines but at a reasonable cost so a normal blue collar guy can dream about one and it is still attainable if they started adding hand stiched leather and finely polished wood the price would soar out of the reach of their core demographic and most of the blue collar middle america folks that love and cherish these cars would no longer have a high performance car that they can afford--I say if you don't like them that's fine dont buy one and that leaves more cars for me to choose from!

The type that saves up for one--Most of my family are straight blue collar-Construction, Plumbers, carpenters-and they save up for either a Vette or a Harley

I don't know about the US but in England plumbers are in huge demand, and earn a lot of money. They all have Mercs and things. I wouldn't call them blue collar, anyone who owns or runs his own company isn't IMO. Blue collar to me means works in a factory or is a cleaner or something. Even non-manual labour workers can be blue collar ie Homer Simpson or similar. But your interpretation is different I suppose, maybe it's the country difference.
Oh and of course "affordable performance" in England usually means a hot hatch (Golf Gti or Focus ST or Megane 225)or a used car, we have nothing like the Corvette. People would rather spend their money or prestige than pure performance, which I believe in many ways to be more sensible. a 7 litre 2 seat plastic sports car is the last thing on these people's mind, they probably have kids or wives so they get something easier but also fun, like a GTI or a 330ci or just a bigger car like a 5 series. What would you appreciate more everyday, 0-60 in 4.5 or a well crafted, nice feeling and looking interior, a good ride?
And a Corvette here in Britian costs the wrong side of 80000 dollars.

Ferrari (and some others) have had some pretty 'plain-Jane' interiors over the years and no one complains. In fact, these Euro cars are seen as 'more prestigious' while Corvette is regarded as lower grade for doing the same thing (enhancing performance while being conservative on interior appointments).

All pretty much stereotypes and perceptional.

Oh those Brits. They are a real study aren't they? Actually, anyone viewing the British fanaticism on autos knows they want both performance and luxury. Their Lotus is an example of total performance obsession with compromise everywhere else. As far as "well crafted" goes, the Corvette has better quality ratings than most of the manufacturers regarded as prestigious (like Benz) being driven in the UK (especially those 'crafted' in the UK - do you remember British Leyland? And Land Rover is one of the worst rated quality control vehicles in the whole world).

This is all about the perceptional tendencies of the Brits. They've always looked down upon American products while heralding their own despite their cars being every bit as much in the quality doghouse and now heavily dependent upon American companies (and buyers) to pick up the slack.

Oh, and one more thing, as a Brit, perhaps you can take a bit more pride in at least spelling your country correctly. Britain is spelled like so. :)

My point is few people in Britain would want to spend 85000 dollars on a cheap feeling car with little badge prescence when for just 10000 dollars more they could get something like a Jaguar XK or a BMW 6 series.

And yes, we always have looked down upon American cars. American's flaunted Cadillac and Lincoln, but we had Bentley and Rolls-Royce. And while we may not have too many home-owned cars, I think it's suprising that GM and Ford's European efforts are so much better than their American ones.
Compare the Fusion with the Mondeo or the Vectra with the G6. Compare a Range Rover's interior to a Lincoln's.
British cars, are of course ridiculously unreliable, BUT Land Rover came ahead of M-B in the last Top Gear survey, and Jaguar was 9th. But they cars we do build can be reliable - all Honda Civic hatchbacks are built in Swindon, Toyota and Nissan both have plants here too.
And the thing with the Lotus is that it costs less than 60000 dollars here, so it is more easily a second car. The Corvette is too expensive for its short comings to be overlooked, if they knocked 15000 dollars off the price it would be a complete hit.
I'm not trying to insult the Corvette, but its pricing is very wrong for the British market, for the price they charge, I'd expect a better interior, more luxury, more of a GT, and I'd like the steering wheel on the right side. People wanting to spend that sort of money ignore the corvette and jump for the european offerings.
Oh, and the Dodge Viper is 140000 dollars here. Nobody buys that.

Well, Rupert, over here it IS $15K less. You can get a very well-equipped Corvette for $60,000.

And, no badge presence? I'd say that on England's streets it would be pretty novel to see a Corvette. It would create quite a stir at the country club, and people would stare.

It would cause a stir yes, the wrong kind. A brash, American-styled vehicle doesn't fit well with the Jaguar and Mercedes crew, and like I said, the Corvette doesn't have nearly enough luxury for this market.
People don't know what a Corvette is, it's a Chevrolet, which in Britain means "rebadged Daewoo".

Its a Vette. GM hasn't been known for interior designs for a very long time if ever.. and the vette is about power for a lower price.. One thing about the vette, its been on the market for over 50 yrs now. And as far as blue collar goes, I always thought someone who works with their hands (like builders weilders factory workers and ect..)was blue collar reguardless of their take home.

I can't wait til it beats all the european cars! Presently the standard vett is in top gears top 25ish and the souped up version is even better! Maybee this will make the top ten! I didn't see any Japanese vehicles in the top 15! Don't get me wrong I like Japanese vehicles, It just anoyes me when everyone dises the vet for being an American car! It apears to be kicking sand in some faces! LOL

Good to see that now you've added lower body. The mid and upper body have visual differences as well, especially the hood. The roofline from C6 to Z06 and SS are substantial as well as brake calipers, exhaust and air-damming. But if all this weren't already readily apparent to you, then having this discussion with you is pointless.

I read a review on the Audi R8 in Car & Driver today...

"There's nothing like a paid professional [Jacky Ickx] to impress writers, but none of us really needed Ickx behind the wheel to see that this new-generation, mid-engined sports car has dynamic qualities that make the once-supreme Acura NSX feel downright unstable in comparison."

I don't think the NSX could run with many of today's sports cars.

By the way, the R8's highs: "Stunning street presence, awesome exhaust note, brilliant dynamics." Its only low? "Over-the-shoulder blind spot." The verdict: "A beautifully realized example of the genre." I'd say that's a pretty stellar review.

The present Z-06 beats all Audi cars! I am basing this on top gear lap times, The Corvette is number 13 with a lap time of 1.22.4sec . The closest Audi (Audi S4) is at number 52 with a lap time of 1.30,then at number 55 is the famous NSX. The Z-06 beats the Lamborghini Murcielago 1.23.7 at number 14! Dis it as you like but remember it still outperforms most of the performance cars for a fraction of the price! There is some sand in your faces! LOL

Didn't you hear? EVO magazine tested the Z06 in England and said on bumpy B-roads, the suspension and handling couldn't cope and it tram-lined and lost its composure, the same roads the 911 GT3 performed faultlessly on.

So you do get more when you pay more, surprisingly.

Good to know,We must all apreciate any vehicle that can handle a rough road fast! according to top gears track times the 911 GT3 is .01 secounds faster than the Z06 around the track. If you can afford the extra $$$ why not! For your average Joe it may not be worth it.

Mathew, again according to top gear the fastest Audi tested is the S4 coming in at the top 52 compared to the z-06 at number 12! Enlighten us all to what the fastest Audi is.I don't know? But the bottom line, number 12 is ahead of the Lamborgini Marcielago!
