In BMW's ever-growing product portfolio, there's one vehicle that outsells the rest. That would be the 3-Series. The universally loved, accolade-winning luxury sedan that has been the benchmark for decades now.

While it's tough to argue that it still remains at the top of its class with all-new entrants like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and all-new Audi A4, the 3'er is doing its best to hang on. Though it was just refreshed, we're turning our eyes to the next-generation 3-Series. That's because BMW has to bring its "A" game.

Though we're not entirely sure what will be in store for the next-gen Bimmer, we do know that it's been caught for the very first time during developmental testing on the 'Ring. Although the vehicle is heavily camouflaged at this super early stage, it's clear that the proportions are likely to remain largely the same with a footprint similar to the current-gen automobile. Styling is tough to tell at this point but we'll be keeping a close eye on it so when the camo comes off you're the first to know what's going on.

Here's what we think BMW needs to do in order to make the 3-Series more competitive:

- Lighten the load and drop weight
- Make use of the i8's 1.5-liter, three-cylinder engine
- Make sure the steering rack provides as much feedback as possible and is unique when compared to the C-Class and A4
- Make an effort to ensure the interior is top notch and not low brow
- Follow the lead of other manufacturers and ensure the center stack has a 12+ inch infotainment screen
