The Ferrari 458 Italia is arguably one of the marque's best products aside from the LaFerrari supercar. Equipped with a mid-engine V8 it's been battling the likes of the McLaren 650S and all-new Lamborghini Huracan.

Of course, there's just one problem. Both of those cars have a decent power advantage over the prancing horse. Obviously, that's not acceptable after a certain period of time. As with most mid-engine V8 Ferraris of yore, the car puts out a special edition — in this case, the 458 Speciale — then it is followed up with a newly refreshed variant.

In this case speculation is pointing to a turbocharged V8 that will be known as the 458M a la the nomenclature change seen with the 550 Maranello to 575M refresh. Given the rate Ferrari continues to leap frog its outgoing models, plus with the newly revamped California T's gains, power is speculated to be in the 650 horsepower neighborhood.

The prototype pictured appears to benefit from the addition of some of the 458 Speciale's parts and seems to have some small modifications to the aerodynamics — look at the rear spoiler and new cutouts for air to pass over the car — to differentiate it over the 458 Italia. Knowing the Italians though, this is merely a decoy and something even more sexy is waiting in the wings. It could be mild or it could be a bit more wild like when the 360 became the 430.
