Arguably the greatest super car that ever existed comes down to two vehicles:

1) The Ferrari F40, which was adored for its lightweight build and addictive twin-turbos that would suck your brain out of your skull once, of course, they spooled up.

2) The McLaren F1, which for quite some time was the world's fastest car -- it still is the world's fastest naturally aspirated car.

Which you choose doesn't particularly matter because they're both winners and unbelievable engineering marvels.

The cool thing is that while Ferrari built the F50 and Enzo, the F1 never was succeeded. Why even bother, to be frank. Nothing could be as good as the original, right?

Well, don't be so sure of it.

As you can see from the latest crop of spy photographs, McLaren is tinkering around with an F1 successor.

Though it looks pedestrian from the front, you have to get a proper look at its side profile and of its hind quarters. From the side you see a MUCH more curvaceous shape emerging, specifically around the greenhouse and front fenders.

Once you get to the back it's clear this vehicle is all about getting down to business. Note the large diffuser, large Lamborghini-like centrally mounted exhaust and very intriguing rear spoiler area. Also check out that roof scoop that's sure to bring in more air to the power source.

Speculation suggests that the F1 successor will be powered by the MP4-12C's 3.8-liter V8, albeit heavily modified. Expectations are hovering around 900 horsepower and a boost from a KERS system.
