The chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee wants Hyundai Motors Co. and Kia Motors to answer questions about plans to compensate 900,000 owners after the companies admitted overstating estimated gas mileage.

The automakers could spend $100 million or more to compensate owners. They have vowed to reimburse owners, plus add a 1 percent premium, by sending them a debit card that will be reloaded for future travel.

"While I believe this is a positive step, I am concerned that many affected customers may not learn about the program or may find it burdensome to participate in the program," said Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., who oversees the panel that deals with auto issues. His comment was in letters Thursday to Hyundai U.S. chief John Krafcik and Byung Mo Ahn, who is Kia Motors America group president and CEO.
