Simply Awesome: Subaru 086A STI

"the knowledge gained from tuning the suspension for the WRX STi will be used. It is unknown whether the parts will be directly carried over."

This car will be much lighter and it appears to have a lower cg. You cannot simply put another cars suspension parts on it without all sorts of nasty side effects like wheels hop. Hopefully it gets new suspension.

250hp STI? Unless the car is significantly lighter, why are we going backwards?

i've got a confession to make.

you see, i had had grown out of toyota/lexus ever since the iconic toyota supra stopped production and had had ditched an is300 to get a 325i, which was eventually replaced by an e46 m3. when toyota stopped producing anything remotely fun to drive years and years back, i had come to loathe the toyota motor corporation. even as lexus prepped up its F division by introducing the is-f and developing the lf-a (is-f a letdown by the more entertaining bmw m3 and the lf-a in supercar aka i-own-my-own-company territory and still in limbo), i hadn't been able to get excited about anything coming out of toyota's production line in years...

until last year when i got excited hearing about the prospect of resurrecting the original hachi roku. i mean, even though many of us are from generation y and hadn't been around when the corolla gt-s was on sale, we've ALL seen what the AE86 is capable of. and then about a week ago, out of the blue, photos start surfacing about the ft-86. i thought it was pretty wild. its proportions and curves certainly made more sense than the strange lexus ft-hs concept it's based off of.

originally, the AE86 was meant to be a family sports car, affordable and fun. so i understand why the output of 200hp (similar to the original's 1.6 liter 16 valve). but without knowing the price of either toyota/subaru, now i'm not so sure that a mere 200hp would be justifiable for a car like this....

nowadays there seems to be a dozen manufactures all with their own take on what an entry supercar should be like, especially within the $20-30,000 bracket. with only 200hp, it's fair to speculate that it would start at around $20,000. on one hand it has to worry about all those affordable sports cars within the marque, and the other hand it has to worry about subaru's take on the platform as well.

what interest or trouble me are its dimensions and specs. when it was revealed that the ft-86 concept has a wheelbase of 2570mm, that's actually a tad longer than 370z's (though it sits a little lower than the 370z as a concept car). it's certainly have to be a lot lighter than 370z's 3232 pound curb weight to utilize the 200hp 4-potter. but nissan traded weight savings for more rigidity. with a bargain car like this, exotic materials are certainly out of the question. and 200hp only? sure, germany's favorite gti and the civic type r are only 200hp, but they have so much heritage. the new mazda 3 is amazing and the brilliant gti has complete redesign on the way (the 3 currently starts at 20k and the gti starts at 23).

if the price approaches that of the 370z (i'm sure it won't), it wouldn't have the performance and bargain value to win against the 370z. especially now that the z has become a modern icon of sorts. however, if toyota/subaru can manage to introduce their cars maybe even below $20,000, they may have a chance to have a best-seller on their hands. hopefully not like the scion tc'

sale volume (only a couple thousands a month in america), but 10x more in volume to be nearer to corolla's sale volumes.

waiting for a product to released is always hard, as is asking questions that have no answers to yet. could more specifications follow the tokyo motor show's opening on the 24th? i guess we'll just have to wait and see.
