Some neighbors recently traded in a BMW 3-series for a $44,000 Chevrolet Volt and couldn’t be happier.
And why not? The Volt was a steal: $159 a month on a two-year lease, with no money down. That’s what you’d pay to lease a stripped-down Toyota Corolla, not a piece of advanced technology.
$159. No deposit. And no gas? Sign me up.
At that price, you’d expect Volts to be flying out the door. So why aren’t they? Last week, General Motors said it would suspend Volt production to bring down excess inventories (and to prepare the Detroit factory where it is built for the launch of a new gasoline-powered Impala sedan.)
