Following up on my previous thread about the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) press release that was issued, if you're a bit lazy about acting on this one I have two more reasons why you should be PROACTIVE.

First, given the volume of cars recalled in this issue there will be a delay in getting the vehicles fixed. Obviously this is not ideal but the sooner you get on the list the sooner your car will get fixed — theoretically.

Second, from the sounds of reports of people that have had the unfortunate luck of finding out the hard way, it sounds like the Takata airbags are essentially improvised explosive devices (IED) about 10 inches from your face. That's because when they release, the airbags send shrapnel into the vehicle's occupants.

Yeah, not good.

According to one report of a victim that, unfortunately, passed away from her accident, the injured party looked like she was stabbed and the police initially were conducting a homicide investigation.

Once again, not good.

...“We want to make sure that everyone out there — and we’ve got millions of vehicles involved — is getting engaged and is getting their vehicles fixed to protect themselves and their families,” said David J. Friedman, deputy administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

But the urgent request was bound to create confusion among owners. Honda said it did not have enough parts to fix the cars immediately. Toyota said it would in some cases disable the air bags, leaving a note not to ride in the front passenger seat. Even Mr. Friedman acknowledged that the agency’s list of vehicles covered by the warning was not complete...
