Making waves is an all-new story written by the very famed former automotive executive, Bob Lutz. Lutz is familiar with controversy as many of his talking points and sound bytes have been causing a stir for years now. 

But just as much buzz as he's created, he hasn't always been on point.

Take, for example, the Via venture. Or, how about VLF Automotive?

Sure, the guy has credibility but if we were to evaluate it over the past several years it's more like a drunk grandfather talking at your family's Thanksgiving dinner. Hugely entertaining but not particularly welcome or thought out.

Having said that, I did want to share Lutz's take on the automotive industry. Essentially, he says it's the end of the road. The automotive business is pretty much over as we switch from automobiles to what he describes as autonomous modules that will zip us to and from our respective destinations. 

When this will happen? 15-20 years "at the latest," writes Lutz. This all makes sense as human-driven autos will be legislated off the roads around that time. 

I know it sounds like a bad sci-fi flick but I suggest you give Lutz's byline a read. That's because — at least — it is an entertaining read. Worst case? He's right and we're all getting into modules in 15-20 years.

It saddens me to say it, but we are approaching the end of the automotive era.

The auto industry is on an accelerating change curve. For hundreds of years, the horse was the prime mover of humans and for the past 120 years it has been the automobile.

Now we are approaching the end of the line for the automobile because travel will be in standardized modules...
