The ergonomics department at BMW headquarters in Munich could turn fastening a Velcro strip into a four-step process with footnotes, but nobody builds a more elegant and enjoyable car than their colleagues in engineering and design.
The 2009 BMW 750Li is a case in point. Gracefully styled, luxuriously trimmed and as light on its feet as a sport sedan half its size, the 750Li also showcases BMW's penchant for over-complicating features that should require no thought at all.
In addition, the 750Li's powerful but thirsty engine falls prey to the U.S. gas-guzzler tax.
The new 750Li's looks and performance recall the cars that made the 7-series the clear leader among luxury sedans priced in the low six figures, but tough competition from the Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz S-class and the new Porsche Panamera has knocked the 750Li off its perch above other big German luxury sedans. It's good, but no longer the undisputable best.
