Toyota Overtook GM in First-half World Sales: Gain means Toyota poised to end GM’s 77-year run as top carmaker
TOKYO - Toyota sold more than 4.8 million vehicles worldwide in the first half, up 2 percent from the same period a year earlier, the Japanese automaker said Wednesday.

That exceeded General Motors Corp.’s sales of 4.5 million vehicles in the same period, setting up Toyota to potentially end GM’s 77-year run as the world’s top automaker by sales.

Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman Hideaki Homma said the company sold 4,817,941 vehicles globally during the first six months of the year.

Is this surprising?...uhhhh nope!...not at all!!!...GM will continue to learn their lesson the hard way. And they still have to figure out how to not only be overlapped by Toyota...but also Honda & Hyundai as the up and coming!!! Too bad Bobby boy No Clue Lutz and Numb-Nutz Wagoner, too bad!!! And this is just the begining of it all.

Hyundai??? GM isn't in great shape right now, but c'mon dude. The only thing lower than a Hyundai is a Ford or a Chinese car.

You do realize that the Hyundai-Kia group is the world's 5th largest automaker, right?

Hopefully this will inspire GM to continue making improvements to reclaim the crown. You can count GM out if you want, but they are still a force to be reckoned with. 77 years at the top is a great run, and they just need to rediscover what got them there the first time.

Despite me being a GM fan I still see problems. While they are making some great strides in some areas they fall short in others. The Beat should have been designed to meet US standards, the Cruze should replace Cobalt next year (not 3 years from now), and there is still to much overlap and re-badging going on. Still great strides. I hope the management team remembers that profitability and the long term health of the company is more important that who sells the most cars in a year.

What got them there in the first place was a lack of any real competition. But now that the competitions have set up shop on American soil, you're just beginning to realize the reality of their poorly run organization.
