Toyota Says It Has No Plans To Quit F1

Toyota has declared itself resolutely committed to continuing in formula one despite what promises to be its first operating loss for 70 years as the depression in the global car industry worsens.

"We have absolutely no plans to withdraw from formula one," a spokeswoman, Yoshie Matsu­ura, told the Guardian. Matsu­ura said Toyota had embarked on a major cost-cutting study but could not specify what measures were under consideration. "We know that [F1] is very expensive and that cost-cutting is the key to survival," she said.

Toyota participates in pretty much every race on planet.

They've won championships in WRC. They just took over NASCAR in only couple years.

Eat this: Formula 1 is for the big boys and Nissan can't hang with the big boys.

I think this is a mistake by Toyota's management. They run a marginal team at best. They can't compete with the big boys (Ferrari and McLaren) and are even behind the second tier Renault and BMW teams.

They are better off putting the F1 budget money to improving their existing products.

Honda quit F1 because it could'nt afford to continue. They simply don't have that kind of cash reserve. Toyota owns more than just Toyota and Lexus. They own about 40% of Panasonic,owns part of Subaru,owns Hino motors which is one of the worlds best diesel engines,owns a host of other quality renown companies and can still buy out 5 of its closest competititors. It's the sound of Enevitability. They will win in F1 and they have the chips to continue...period.

My '84 LandCruiser diesel had a 3.5-liter 4-cyl. Toyota diesel, but I could get parts from the local Hino truck dealer because all parts were interchangable.
I don't know if Toyota licensed the design, or just copied it.
Hino is good.
Isuzu is better, which is why GM went Isuzu for their truck engine rather than their partner Toyota.

Its too bad Toyota spends all that money on a race technology that is unrelated to street cars.
None of the technology trickles down.
Whereas other brands competing in endurance-type racing (Audi - Le Mans; Mitsubishi - Dakar; Subaru - WRC) create technology directly applicable to the vehicles that we buy and drive.

But hey, this is great news for F1 fans!

Toyota is a world leader in Hybrids so they don't need diesels. People in Middle East are eagerly awaiting the first hybrids from Toyota/Lexus and 2010 Lexus RX450h is rumoured to be the first official Toyota hybrid for the middle East. Recentley i cheaked the all new Lexus RX350 inside out in the Abu Dhabi Motorshow and it is a good looking crossover. In pictures it doesn't look very good but in real life it's a looker. The interior is very stylish and unique with as usual high quality meterials used through out.

BTW this year Toyota got a good chance of getting better in F1 with almost all new rules and regulations. Toyota should definately show improvement and i am sure they won't dissapoint. This year watch out Renault and BMW if not Ferrari and Mclaren.

Don't kid yourself. Toyota needs diesels because hybrids are expensive and unwanted in certain markets. Unlike the gullible American consumer, Europeans for example question how an already overweight vehicle with a heavy hybrid system and an overpowered gasoline engine is supposed to get good MPG. They don't take the Toyota advertising in just like that: they question it.

Toyota's lack of advanced diesel engines is going to be a big problem for them eventually. Hybrids aren't the solution, neither are diesel cars, but diesel cars do have some really good advantages over an over-marketed hybrid.

No, Europeans have simply diesel fuel cheaper than petrol becouse of tax structure much more favourable for diesel fuel. And that's the only reason why diesels are so popular in Europe.

I don't see the reasoning behind Toyota's participation in motor sports. They have no sports car to begin with so all that technology that's used for the F1 cars will never be implemented into a mass produced car so I think they should step away from racing for a while until they are ready to build a sports car.

a few years ago, toyota entered the CART series. they were highly successful almost from the start, giving Honda and others strong competition.

if i recall right, their first entry in the Indy 500 won, embarrassing GM whose Olds/Chevy entries were among the back markers.

same thing happened when the leaders all switched over to IRL. from which ford and gm dropped out.

Put the Supra TT on a racetrack and it'll destroy pretty much anything under $200,000 and built 15+ years after it and it doesn't need 8+ cylinders to do it.

I also don't see NASCAR losing teams even during hard times. Where's the F1 money for the teams that keep disappearing? NASCAR might end up having more teams than F1 if this continues.
If anything, NASCAR is expanding races, not cutting them out of schedule.

$200,000 so "enthusiasts" can't say Toyota has no racing experience. If they don't win, can't really blame them, if they do, looks bad on the "pros". At $5000 per car, that's only 40,000 Corollas out of 9 million cars sold.
