Toyota develops world’s first “Map on Demand” technology

Toyota announced Wednesday that it has developed the world’s first technology for automatically delivering map data to a car’s navigation system.

This technology—which TMC has named “Map on Demand”—will be made available to drivers as a new feature of TMC’s Japanese-market G-BOOK telematics service from the spring of 2007.

Map on Demand, which was jointly developed with Aisin AW Co, Zenrin Co, Denso Corporation and Toyota Mapmaster Incorporated, delivers updated data on all Japanese expressways and toll roads, as well as on roads near the registered home of the subscriber and on roads in the vicinity of user-specified destinations. Data is delivered via cell phone networks, Internet downloads, etc.

Wait wait, you all know that Toyota doesn't have any real innovations. This is an idea that Toyota copied from another German compay. Another German company announced this 100 years ago. Toyota is just following through on their plans just like self parking and hybrid technology. Just because the German company didn't make a working example doesn't mean they didn't have the idea first. Toyota sucks

In response: you suck that is not true. Show me proof where they did that. Why don't they have it today???
BMW sucks.

Sometime I think you guys sleep in sleigh beds that are shaped like Camry's and your bed sheets are made from the same Toyota flag that was hanging in front of their headquarters in Japan...Get a life!

They will definitely have stiff competition from other systems like XM NavTraffic which are already up and runing and can be accessed from Portable devices that can be used in multiple cars--something like this will be on only Nav cars and if there are multiple cars per house hold people may want to shell out $4-800 for a Garmin with NavTraffic rather than $2500 on a nav in only one car

The reason realtime traffic on-demand is taking so long is because each car/truck maker needs the cost of wireless transmission to be cost effective such that they can monopolize telematic services to subscribers over the lifetime of "their" vehicles. This is scary because we won't know what they'll really be doing with our personal data. I would feel more comfortable when the industry allows its customers (the real data owners) to choose and switch providers as they wish.

Stupid Toyota, came up with an idea that was invented before by guess who? VW :))))

All the fuss about Toyota inventing something on the thread, like they never invent anything! Probably they do, but you guys are playing like this is such a big deal.

Check the link below, you'll see VW already developed something 10 times better, not only is updating (all the time) from the Web, but is also displaying maps in 3D. Plus some other features which not even laptops have today (like a decent video card, Nvidia helped developing this project with a nice card for the 3D).

Even that the Toyota news is something GOOD of course, I still wonder how can you guys can be so impressed .. what is the big deal? They say data will be downloaded via cell phones or internet downloads, myself I understand you will have to do the upgrade yourself, from time to time. Even the new Nokia N95 phone (which has a GPS device inside) can download all data maps, for every region you are at the moment (for free, from Nokia server, over 100 countries). And that phone will be around 600$. The only difference between the phone and the navigation system is the screen, bigger screen .. and triple the price. What a big invention !

Same thing: internet connectivity, upgrades and two way communication between navi sys and the web. You can have someone send you the address over the web and the Navi will see it and follow it (if you decide to do so, of course).
