VW bringing turbodiesel Touareg to LA Auto Show
Diesels are quickly joining hybrids and plug-in electrics as the new show-car theme.

The reasons are simple: efficiency, both in terms of fuel and finance, is driving carmakers and consumers to give diesel-fueled vehicles another chance. The new Touareg TDI will feature a smaller V6 engine in addition to the meaty and expensive V10 TDI (pictured) already available.

The V10 TDI is slick. Always wanted one. Over 500 lb-ft torque is very desirable for an SUV that doesn't look like it could have any muscle at all. The "sleeper" powertrain of the decade. Having 17c/22h fuel numbers are descent for an SUV having so much power.

Rode behind one in southern Maryland a few years ago. The highway had a lot of rolling hills and curves...the Touareg looked great the whole trip. I wish I could get one loaded & with rear DVD monitors in the headrests.

It is good news that the V6 TDI may come. While the V-10 TDI is the uber diesel toy, at $70,000 +, not many people see it as a way to save money at the pump.

The V6 TDI will still be a dear purchase, but gives what should be a less expensive alternative to the ML-320 CDI

The V-10 TDI was discontinued after the '07 U.S. model. As long as they market it well, the V6 TDI will do well. But what's more important is hoping the American economy comes back around and the gap closes between the Euro and the U.S. dollar. I don't believe VW has a U.S. plant that can build Touaregs now and the soonest another plant comes on line here is 2011 (please correct me if I'm wrong on those details, thanks).

The dollar is gaining fast on the Euro. From almost hitting 1.60 in July it is heading fast towards 1.40 to the dollar. The European manufacturers must be heaving a sigh of relief.
