Video: Corvette ZR1’s 7:26.4 Nurburgring Lap
On June 27th, GM development engineer Jim Mero took the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 around the Nurburgring in 7:26.4 - beating the Nissan GT-R’s 7:29 lap. As we were promised, GM has realeased a video of the Corvette ZR1’s Nurburgring lap (you can watch it after the jump).
The 2009 Corvette ZR1 driven by Mero was all stock according to GMNext. However, some may disagree - but we’ll leave it up to you to debate the sudden urge to flaunt Nurburgring laptimes.
The $103,300 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is powered by a LS9 supercharged 6.2L V8 engine producing 638-hp, giving it the ability to go from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 205mph.

Holy s@#t what a ride! God, is that beast, fast. And I mean beast in every sense of the word. When you watch the GTR video, it seems like the driver is on a Sunday drive, more or less. Mero is fighting the whole way, and does a wonderful job. The beauty or the problem, depending on your opinion, of RWD is maximizing the performance without loosing control. As good as this lap is there's still a few spots where he had the tail slidding, obviously loosing precious time.

I was watching this on YouTube last night. This is great. The GTR is also on there. The ZR1 video is much better.

I completely agree with you, a sportscar should give you your money worth in sweat. He is fighting that thing hard, which also makes me believe that the ZR1 was in stock condition. The suspension seems soft enough, I think he almost bottomed out at some point and the car looks a bit twitchy a couple of time. he does oversteer a couple of time and mero, while doing a great job seems to be under maximal rev a few times, I am sure that engine has plenty of pulling but still, I think that this car could beat its own time. A 7;25 does not look impossible.
anyway it is a great video, great job by the driver and kudos to GM. I love the fact that a good old recipe (big V8-RWD) can beat the techno wizardry of the japanese(GT-R).

So this ZR-1 beats the mighty 997 GT2. We'll have to see how it fairs with the Nismo GT-R V-Spec II when it comes out next year. Not to mention the LF-A and the new NSX.
Nonetheless, job well done for GM. Now they just need to tweak it a bit to make it go quicker than the Ford GT and Viper Venom.

Shit just bring out the car already and let the buyers decide. If this car runs true to GM form, there will be a lot of them visiting the service depts. Then, since service won't have clue how to fix it, GM will be shipping a lot of new engines.

It's not entirely clear how these times compare as the ZR1 was timed using a rolling start and from an atyupical start point. You can get more information and compare times of these and other cars on this track at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordschleife_fastest_lap_times
