Volkswagen may cut temporary posts in response to Europe's weak market but won't close factories or reduce its permanent work force, CEO Martin Winterkorn said.

"We will not withdraw any capacity from Europe but rather preserve capacity in Europe," Winterkorn said in an interview with Austrian broadcaster ORF on Friday.

But he left the door open to trimming temporary staff that the automaker built up in boom years. "The regular staff is certainly something we will hold on to. We will have to think about temporary staff," he said.

On Thursday, Winterkorn told shareholders at the company's annual meeting to brace for a tough year because of slowing European consumer demand.
