Volkswagen AG plans to produce an all-new sport utility vehicle in the United States designed for American customers, Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn said Tuesday.
The new model would be bigger than the $22,995 Tiguan SUV, smaller than the $43,000-plus Touareg, but cost less than either of them, he told reporters in New York.
The Wolfsburg, Germany-based automaker will reach a formal decision about the vehicle soon, but not this year, Winterkorn said.
VW plans to build the SUV in the U.S. but has not said where. Its new Chattanooga, Tenn., plant, where VW builds the Passat, is one option.
