When Ferrari created the 16M Scuderia Spider and Lamborghini built the Spider Performante, you had to know Audi would likely build their own high-performance, drop-top R8. And they did.

But enthusiasts always rip convertibles for missing the point. Although, the more I drive GOOD convertibles, the more I disagree. Without question, the best performance convertible I've had the chance to pilot was the Porsche Boxster Spyder. It felt glued to the road and when the weather was nice, my, my. What a great car to get the wind blowing through your hair.

Hardcore drivers though say that convertibles are for posers. Why is that? Because they're fun?

Can anyone explain this to me like I am a two year old? I mean, if you want to get TECHNICAL, Formula One cars are open top vehicles -- I know, I am stretching this argument a bit far here.

Anyway, before I get going on a Dennis Miller-inspired rant here, let's get back to the car. The R8 GT Spider is alive and it appears from the shifter that Audi is going to construct another 333 units globally, as it did with the coupe. With any luck, the U.S. will get its hands on 90 of them -- like last time.

Until then, this is the best we can do. Check out the Audi R8 GT Spider promo video down below.
