Toyota Working on Cheap Family Car

Toyota Working on Cheap Family Car
According to the WSJ, Toyota is working on developing a cheap family car to compete with Renault’s Logan, a $7,000 car. Toyota is hoping that this vehicle will help it gain even more ground in competing markets where it is already scaring competitors GM and Ford on US ground. The car is expected to begin production in 2009 where it will be launched in China, Brazil and Thailand first. Toyota recently beat Ford as the world’s number two auto maker.

I thought Toyota had that Gaygo (spelling?) vehicle in Europe that was priced a little above this Logan but under 10,000 E?

in the uk the aygo is 6500 pounds.
the citroen c1 is 5995.
fiat panda, kia picanto, daewoo matiz are cheaper, but the logan is not sold in developed countries, only in romania etc.
the aygo isn't cheap enough, the logan is UNDER 7500 dollars, about 5000 euros or less.

Rupert, the Logan is sold in developed countries such as France, Germany or Austria. It probably isn't sold in the UK because re-tooling the factory and car for RHD purposes will be too costly - and there probably is not a strong demand for this car in the UK.

Rupert,

I don't know, I assume they are sold in France. I saw some of them there the last time I was in Europe.

Now the next question is, will Toyota make a Lexus version of this beautiful automobile?

I think that Toyota is following in the footsteps of Mercedes again. Remember, Mercedes is the maker of the wonderful and beautiful Smart car.

Cynic, the Smart wasn't really that revolutionary, no matter what the marketing might claim. You just create a car and make it really small. Nothing innovative about that. The marketing guys however claim that it is in order to "sell" the thing.

Willis,

I was being ironic when I said that the Smart car was beautiful and wonderful. In fact, I have seen several of them, sat in them, and believe me, they are CRAP! It was really more a joke towards uninformed people who always say that Toyota always copies everyone else.

There you go again with your stupid comments!!
Just because you can't afford to drive one does not mean you should talk bad about Lexus!!!
Even an 1990 ES250 probably has more technology than what your driving (BMW)!!!!

Well this is needed as we have already seen in the other blog saying Suzuki overtakes Honda in Japaneese car markets.
How because of kei or small car's success and Honda lacks them.

When companies start building better and pricey cars they often forget the lower end of the market which is very important as well.

So i think a good step from TOYOTA considering many World Car markets and there demands.Especially the developing countries.

The Renault-Dacia Logan is currently only sold in Europe. However Renault will sell a "Renault Logan" int he UK next year with "low" prices. I say "low" because the price will be jacked up sky high....
