Driven: 2007 Audi S6

Driven: 2007 Audi S6
Consider the position of Audi’s new S6 and the predicament in which the Audi brand finds itself in the American marketplace. A case can be made that the situations are surprisingly parallel. Like the entire Audi brand, the S6 has matured, yet is lagging somewhat in visibility compared to its German rivals. Also like the brand itself, the S6 must stand on its own, continuing to appeal to the traditional Audiphile, yet still catch the eye of those who’ve never owned or even considered a car with those four chrome rings affixed to the grille.

The buzzword about Audi’s positioning as of late in the halls of Auburn Hills is “Restart.” This term represents a whole new approach to the American market, with fresh new product that will captivate more customers than ever and convert them to the brand. At the same time, success relies on Audi staying credible to its traditional customers. For no other car in Audi’s lineup will this be seemingly more apparent than for the S6.

No mention of LS460? BMW530, if you were a true car inthusiast then your comparison would've made sense.
Do you the S6 in the LS460's category for you to see the LS460 mentioned? Why is the S6 compared against the M5 and not the S class or the 750i?

When the article is about the S550 and 750i and you don't see the name LS460 only then your comment will make sense.

Did you see the S6 compared against the S550 or the 750i? No.

Let Lexus come up with a super sport sedan then you'll see that name along with the S6/M5 etc...

So don't compare apples and oranges together again, they taste differently. :-)

Looks somewhat plain.I mean there should be some notable styling differences in the body of S6 compared to the regular A6 othere than just the twin tailpippes and minor tweak in the bumpers.

Otherwise a good competitor in the Class, where M5 is the benchmark.

Now that car is beautiful. In my opinion, the Audi A6 is the best looking car in its class and also has the best interior (design and quality wise).

The S6 takes this a step further. This one looked fantastic in red. My only gripe with the car is that it lacks a manual transmission option. I'm not a fan of automatics to be honest.

Thats exactly what i have been saying since i Test Drove this Model. I am not one bit happy with the layout of the Dash (Especially with the Navi) I noticed the same design has made it into the Q7.

Just saw one yesterday while driving. Saw it from behind, so saw the S6 badging. Not sure I would have noticed it otherwise. Not that noticing it is the point, but of course German cars are purchased to be seen in "the right way" which usually means, being noticed as striking, elite, stylish. This car is going to miss that a bit. I'd be curious to hear from a new S6 owner what drew them to it. Perhaps it was a better value than the M5 in their eyes?

The S6 is geared towards drivers who like the Power but none of the Attention Getting Gimmicks that other Manufacturers Bolt Unto Their Cars.

If you are an Excec who wants a powerful Sedan for the Daily Commute but do not wish to garner attention. THIS IS THE CAR FOR YOU

Same can be said for the S8 & S4

The S6 is just too bland for a sportier version of the A6. You can barely tell the S6 apart from an A6. The only difference is slightly different grille with vertical bars, quad exhaust that you can barely see, slightly different bumper which doesn't look much different at all from an S-line A6 4.2.

The RS6 with DSG, twin-turbo V10 and 550 horsepower will surely give the M5 all it can handle in terms of acceleration, and with the improvements of the RS4, track times around the Nurburgring as well.

The RS6, when it is released and if Audi follows the same philosophy as they took to creating the current RS4 (which they probably will after reading all the reviews about how the Audi RS4 is the best driving Audi ever, something tells me they are smart enough to listen), will easily out-accelerate and out-track the BMW M5, just as the RS4 has out-tracked and out-acclerated the BMW M3.

Eventually BMW will release another M5 to get back on top and then Audi will release another RS6. The same can be said for RS4 and M3. BMW was on top in the power sweepstakes, but Audi just created a car (RS4) that will out run it and out-track it on the Ring.

As we speak BMW is in the process of getting back on top.

Make shit up, AmazingBimmer?

Just because we bother to do research and keep up on knowledge about Audi, doesn't mean we make shit up.

When we say the Audi RS6 will have over 520 horsepower, and it is verified through a reputable source that isn't called making shit up.

When we say the Audi R8 in V10 form will go 0-60 in under 4 seconds because the V8 will go 0-60 in 4.2 seconds is not making shit up.

Face the facts: The Audi R8 in V10 form will rip apart any M3, M5, M6, Z4M roadster, or Z4 M coupe that BMW can throw at it, in both a straight-line and at the Ring.

We already know the V10 R8 will be announced approximately 8-10 months after the R8 with V8 hits full production.

GermanNut your an idot. I hope the RS6 will have 520 hp, because it still wont beet the M5. First of all it will weigh more than the M5 hands down.Second I really do not think Audi will build a sedan that will have the same performance as the lambo gallaro. The lambo has 512 or somthing close to that, and the RS6 has "520" ,10 horses will not make up for 600+ pounds of additional weight on the lambo. and you know what, the M5 can run with the lambo to 100 and actually pulls ahead above 100. My prediction on the RS6 is that it will be neck and neck with the RS4 to 100 and probably edge it out at higher speeds.

I like BMW and I like Audi. How can BMW call themselves the Ultimate Driving Machines when we know, Porsche makes better ultimate driving machines than BMW and now Audi will too with the R8.

BMW's passion for handling and driving dynamics has been almost second to none. It is high time that they get in gear and come out with a competitor to the R8 if they would like to retain their position as Ultimate Driving Machine.

I only have greater experience with BMW than you do and of course I wouldn't know anything about them having driven several models from the 3-series, X5 and 7-series platforms.

We have owned many BMWs and I have had a great experience with just about every single one.

Unlike you, I can comprehend the fact that sometimes a car from a certain brand just can't lap the Ring fast enough, can't get to 60 mph in under 4 seconds and might not be able to handle as well as the R8.

I don't need to tell you, AmazingBimmer, that the R8 will be one hell of a performance car. The looks speak for themselves and you have everyone from avid BMW fans, to Porsche enthusiasts and even AMG heads eyeing this car as a potential future purchase. Whether you want to accept the fact that Audi has produced a car that will perform better than any BMW is up to you. I accept that fact and wish BMW would respond quickly with a competitor

When a company produces a type of car that your company does not combined with the fact that the car is a mid-engined, exotic looking car with performance to back up its looks, it is not good for your company.

Somebody needs to respond and respond fast.

"GermanNut" all you talk about is R8 this, R8 that, with the RS4 popping into the topic every so often, but I gotta tell ya man...it's getting boring!

Mabye the reason you talk about them so much is because there the only 2 Audi's not soley outperformed by BMW.

So you know what I'm going to do for you, I'm going to make you a list so can snap out of w.e trans your in, & get on the same page with the rest of us who know BMW's still winning the performance game!

This list is strictly based on performance:

328i vs. A4 2.0T - 328i

335i vs. A4 3.2 - 335i

530i vs. A6 3.2 - 530i

550i vs. A6 4.2 - 550i

750i/750il vs. A8/A8L 4.2 - 750i/750il

760i/760il vs. A8/A8L W-12 - I'm going to say a tie here because while the W-12's faster in straight acceleration, it looses dynamicaly & in braking.

760i vs. S8 - S8...Even though the 760i is still better dynamicaly.

M3 vs. S4 - M3

Z4 vs. TT - Z4

M5 vs. S6 & RS4 - M5 (RS4's better dynamicly though)

M6 vs. R8 - Can't say untill we see some acceleration times.

X5 vs. Q7 - X5

That's 10 to your 1 or 2 depending on the R8's specs.

Just because the S cars are not capable enough.

Some sources have said "R8" or the same as the car we have now with the difference being the engine is a V10 instead of a V8.

Other sources have said R10.

What we do know is that it will produce amazing times around the Nurburgring and will be able to lap the ring in the mid 7:40's range placing it squarely in line with the Ferrari F430, Porsche 911 Turbo (997), Corvette Z06 and faster than the Lamborghini Gallardo.

Audi can and will make the R8 with V10 faster than the Gallardo because when people buy the Gallardo they probably aren't going around looking for the Nurburgring time before they make their purchase.

I don't assume. We have members at Audiworld.org that are on the list for the R10.

I think your brain is rattled because your boyfriend buttfucked you so hard that you lost the abilit to think properly MDalle

I want to drill the R10 facts into all these BMW lovers head so they stop posting shit about how Audi makes bad performance cars and how BMW is supreme.

The R10 will make these badge whores realize that BMW is not supreme at everything.

I like BMW, but I have learned to accept the facts that Audi is on the verge producing a car that will rape any BMW on the Ring or in the straight-line and I want to post it so many times that the BMW fans get sick over it and also accept the fact.

GERMANNUT, why are you talking about the R10? This car is not even out, thats like someone saying the the new Z8 or m6csl or whatever will clean the competiton. There are no hard facts on either of these cars. Its all pure specutalion. and there is no point b/c you cant back any of it up.
"I accept that Audi does not offer class leading performance in every single category." Audi doesnt offer class leading performance in any category.

correction.-Audi does have class leading performance with the RS4 right now. but thats it.

I'll make you so sick of the Audi R10, MDalle, that you'll start dreaming about every BMW getting fucked up on the Ring by this car.

Yes, I do think that just because one car has an Audi badge on it and the other a BMW badge they can be comparable.

I don't give a shit if you were to compare a BMW X5 to an Audi R8. If your comparing a BMW to an Audi it's fair game.

I like BMWs and if I didn't we wouldn't be driving as many as we have. I just learn to accept that sometimes one company can't rule at everything and the numbers will prove that.

Since that is in the process of happening you must opne yourselves up and respect the competition.

AmazingBimmer can't accept the fact, until the R10 will forcibly bitch slap any M BMW at the Ring and in the straights and the twisties.

The R8 is nice, but its existance alone does not make the S6 any better or worse.

You know, I used to think EL34 had the Autospies "biggest jackass poster of the year" all wrapped up. But with GermanNut's recent bizzare postings mixing anal sex with automotive manufacturers, I think we might have a close race now.

I accept that Audi does not offer class leading performance in every single category. BMW owners can't accept the fact that they are about to be eaten alive by the R10 unless BMW has a FAST solution.

I"ll validate it this way: By the time BMW ever comes up with an M10, M9, Z9 or whatever name they will use for a mid-engine exotic shaped semi-supercar, Audi will be waiting with the guns ready to do battle again.

Audi is well aware that they have introduced a car to which there is no competitor from BMW or Mercedes-Benz.

Audi is also smart enough to anticipate that BMW and MB will soon have a proto-type and eventual production mid-engine light-weight car.

Audi is not going to just sit back and wait for the competition to arrive from BMW and MB.

If they are smart, they would be anticipating the arrival of a BMW and MB competitor within the next two years and already have started to tinker with the R10 to make sure that it does indeed stay ahead of the rest.

I think I saw an S6 today. Okay, I only saw the rear exhaust pipes. Two by two for 4 total. I completely agree with you guys, I can definately say that I didn't even notice it following a brand new Bentley Continental Flying Spur until it passed me and I could only see the exhaust pipes.

GermanNut, you are a moron. do u even read the bs that u are putting down in here. how can u say that audi has introduced a car to which there is no competitior from BMW or MB? C'mon dude. I believe that MB has two amazing cars that would romp on any audi. Sl600 amg. 600 hp v12 twin turbo and the slr merc-mcclaren. what u got to say about that fool?

Fool sd173. The SL600 is a luxury roadster with a monster engine that can go fast in a straight-line. The R8 will definetely stomp all over the SL600 on the Nurburgring and could come very close to having the same acceleration numbers as well.

The SLR McLaren costs $452,000.

The Audi R8 costs around $100,000.

Notice the price difference of over $350,000?

Apparently Not...... The R8 will even out-track the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

That goes to show you how much Mercedes gives two shits about track performance.

GERMANNUT-there is no way the R8 will out track the SLR. where is your evidence.....once again your pulling stuff out of your ass. GERMANNUT YOU HAVE A BETTER CHANCE PISSING UP A ROPE. THE YOUR BELOVED R8 DOES OF BEATTING THE SLR WHICH HAS OVER 200 MORE HP THAN THE R8.

The SLR McLaren laps the Ring in 7:50. Pathetic.

How is 7:50 pathetic....the ferrari f430 and the lamborghini mucialago both lap the ring around 7:50.There is no audi that can lap in the sub-8's. Anyway lap times on the ring are irrelevant b/c all the drivers are of different skill levels and they drive the cars in different conditions. The ring is so many miles long, and there are so many places a driver could gain and loose time....its pretty close to pointless to read to much in to the laptimes.Maybe the laptimes on the hockenheim would make more sence...but the ring is to long to draw accurate conclutions from.

I wonder what would happen if you threw a V10 engine with another 80-100 horsepower into a car that is already targeting 7:50 as it's time on the Ring with a V8..... Hmmm......

Im guessing ur not talking about any audi because i dont know a audi production car that can make 7:50 laps around the ring. so are u talking about dropping a v10 in the slr?

The RS4 already does it in 7:58, which is quicker than any BMW currently available.

With a lower center of gravity, significantly lower weight and a better engine placement, it's pretty highly probable that the R8 will get it around the 7:50 mark, if not lower.

Saw the S6 from the front today. The LED Daytime Running Lights are amazing. SUPER bright. It was cloudy and you could see the S6 from FAR away, much better visibility than normal headlight Daytime Running Lights. Actually you could see the S6's LED Daytime Running Ligths better than some headlights on full power of some older cars. The S6 is very noticable from the LEDS on the front. Great safety feature and doesn't use any power.
