World Oil Supply Still Plentiful, Study Shows

World Oil Supply Still Plentiful, Study Shows
World oil production will not begin to fall for at least another 24 years, contrary to doomsday theories that supply is already in terminal decline, a prominent energy consulting group said Tuesday.

Cambridge Energy Research Associates said in a report that the world has some 3.74 trillion barrels of oil left -- enough to last 122 years at current consumption rates and triple the amount estimated by “peak oil” theorists.

The world consumes nearly 85 million barrels of oil per day, with the United States using about a quarter of that, according to the Department of Energy.

Great, let's dump diesels and hybrids and drive 300-hp V8 SUV's!

enough to last 122 years at current consumption rates
<---Read a book and study concluded that at current consumpution rates, we have betweeen 35-40 years of oil left!
Even at 122 years of oil reserve left, that should be accounted for a concern.

As, I have already stated..synthetic materials are from molecular level and at this level..Scientist have been very successful manipulating from its original properties to infinite numbers of use at different needs..at this time, I'm not talking about Money, money being the last important factor given the situation of oil dryingup in next 100 years or so. Having said that..All, I'm sayin is responding to Chewy's comment sounding as if all plastic materials must come only from OIL. I'm saying at that molecular level, if we could manipulate, skies the limit, man.

Well this is great news. But without oil we won't have plastics, in other words back to the first half of the last century.

not true. Have you heard of "Synthetic"? Man made materials from a molecular level? You are thinking completely 360 degrees backward, chewy. This will only lead to more advancement in the technology not going backwards. duh...

nicehomer, its true.
you need the hyrdrocarbons to be able to make monomers and ploymers, both the basis for plastic.
man made is ridiculously expensive.

And, no, I'm not gullable to believe and you shouldn't be either believing everything media or authors are saying..anyhow..

"All, I'm sayin is responding to Chewy's comment sounding as if all plastic materials must come only from OIL."
right now, they do.
and that molecular manipulation thing? we can do that to make gold, and even then, its not worth the money. making sythetic oil is tough enough without having to turn it into an alkene from an alkane (or perhaps the other way round), then split it, add a recurring bond, and make enough to keep plastic production up.
wow, turns out i listened in chemistry last year.

I heard China now uses more oil than any other country in the world is it true ? GREAT oil = plastic we goona gonna be seeing alot more cheap plastic in american cars lol.

The chinese will drain those oil reserves much faster if their growth continues like now (and it will).

China is also one of the largest contributers to pollution in world.

In a recent study findings..Our planet is already 80% over populated. The China definetely has become the largest contributers to pollution in the world and this is the reason, why, I side with a posible solution to the problem as in hybrid or hydrogen instead of dirty diesels and V20 engines. Why complain about it..fix it now.

WTF are you on about ??

The USA is still BY FAR the Largest Polluter of the Atmosphere
Over 24% of the GreenHouse Gasses with only 5% of Worlds Population.

China is a Distant Second, but Increasing Fast.

don't you think it's weird that diesels are referred to as dirty yet the country with no diesels is the most polluting?

you got it right.

no mention has been made yet about co2 and the ACCELERATION of global warming.

even if somehow, we totally STOP co2 production tomorrow, the planet will CONTINUE TO ACCUMULATE more co2 from processes already started. carbon sinks are slowing the rate of sequestation. sources continue to grow with thawing tundra, etc.

we'll destroy our environment long before the last drop of oil is pumped out.

utahkid: "The world is SO overpopulated that you could fit EVERY man, child, and woman on the entire planet into the state of Texas with .028 acres to each person... "

kid, you definitely NEED an education on Malthusian economics. and ecology. and hydrodynamics. atmospheric chemistry. etc. etc.

even if there is SPACE for everyone, where are you gonna get all the WATER they'll need? food? jobs? actual houses to live in? space for their sewerage and garbage?

d'ya think all the mormons on the planet, could ALL fit in the state of Utah?

as you seem to at least have enuff intelligence to use wikipedia, i've got just two words for you to research: CARRYING CAPACITY. try applying that concept to our little planet.

well, SOME environmentalists may be more stident than others, and some MAY occasionally overstate dangers. but that does not NEGATE the fact that there ARE threats.

have you ever seen photos of the Dominican Republic and Haiti?

both share the same island. both are relatively poor. but the Dominicans are more environmentally conscious, and unlike the Haitians, have NOT destroyed a once tropical paradise. they ALSO have a better handle on controlling their population.

if you really believe the planet can COMFORTABLY accomodate the present (to say nothing of projected) level of human population, look at the shantytowns around mexico city, manila, and other large 3rd world cities.

further, the masses living in squalor would have an EVEN LARGER impact on the environment if they had CONSUMPTION and GARBAGE GENERATION rates like americans.

ponder on that a little. THEN consider your position again on environmentalists.

sorry, i've only got a dial-up which is too slow for YouTube.

i know penn & teller are COMEDIANS, so naturally they will make fun of ANYBODY and anything. and people of ANY persuasion, will see their own prejudices reinforced when others flippantly mock their antagonists.

the plain fact is, if you truly believe environmentalists are NOT to be taken seriously, you are simply falling for a whole slew of LIES thrown at you. you think all the unusual weather over the past decade is NORMAL?

do you believe everything Bush says? do you believe everything Rush says? Savage Nation? the latter two are out and out PROPAGANDISTS. as for bush, well, he may or may not actually believe what he's PROGRAMMED to say. he's more a figurehead than a true LEADER.
