Acura MDX a driver's SUV? Edmunds thinks so!

"Normally, trying to be all things to all people is a six-lane freeway to suckitude. This is the downfall of focus-grouped design-by-committee automaking, which waters creativity down to the point of the lowest common denominator. Death by clinic.

With its all-new Megatron-faced 2007 MDX, Acura wants the MDX to be mentioned in the same breath as the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5. Doing so required the new MDX to be a much hotter tamale than the lame-duck MDX in nearly every way, so Acura endowed the 2007 model with a formidable dynamic repertoire. Effectively negotiating the opposing tables of performance, utility and comfort is a delicate balancing act that the smarter, buffer MDX pulls off convincingly.

A brave new face
Looking like the aftermath of a tryst between an Infiniti FX45 and the Muppets' Sam the Eagle, the bulges and creases of the 2007 MDX are a welcome departure from the smooth, invisible lines of the original MDX. Curiously, over the course of 1,700 miles, our MDX tester ferried us to far-off locales in the Southwestern States without drawing a single murmur or sideways glance. Combined with our tester's subdued "Steel Blue" paint, the MDX's pursed mug makes it less Bo Derek and more Derek Zoolander.

It's what's under the skin that counts. A subtle clue to the 2007 MDX's newly invigorated philosophy is the "Comfort" button on the center console. Unlike nearly any vehicle we can think of with split-personality dampers, "Sport" mode is the MDX's default attitude upon startup.

Selecting Comfort mode instantly switches the magneto-rheological dampers to a softer setting that is, frankly, underdamped on some road surfaces — hit a large bump and the body will continue to seesaw for a cycle or two. Forget Comfort mode. Since the standard setting is so well-resolved, it's better to simply leave the button alone. You'll be rewarded with a ride that is sure-footed and firm — never punishing — with a notable lack of the head toss or belly jiggle normally associated with sport-tuned dampers."

It's not a flame, even their consumer commentary(eg those not paid to write) contradicts what they have to say:
Edmunds Consumer Commentary
I own an SUV, and a "sporty" one at that, there's nothing "Driver" worthy about them. :)

How can an opinion be wrong?? Most mags, auto journalists, and others who've driven the new MDX have very positive comments on how it drives, especially compared to the X5 (06), Cayenne (V6), etc. The one Edmunds Consumer Commentary was a joke, especially after comparing it to "driving like an RL, and we all know how the RL sales have been...", paraphrasing. The RL has its own issues, but drivability, especially with its hefty weight was not one of them. Again, many more comments from writers on it being a very good drive, especially at the limits, than "just another Honda".

Hey, we all have our biases towards certain manufacturers (very evident on this site), but saying an opinion is wrong, especially without your reasons why you think that way, is a little disengenuous.

MDX is a nice SUV but is in a different leage than X5 and Cayenne i think. X5 and Cayenne are more of a drivers car.

Don't forget the ML63. It's fairly close in comparison with the Cayenne Turbo S.

The new MDX is my favorite SUV. It can kick the trash out of the X5 and the Cayenne. All they Cayenne is good for is speed.

Hey, don't forget when people are behind you they'll think it's a Q7 until they see the front and they'll see it's an opponent of Godzilla.

SUVs are not driver’s cars. Period. Even when they’re made by BMW. With that, Acura’s entire line-up has always been the sportier Mr. Hyde compared to Toyota’s mild Dr. Jekyl attitude. The X5 may be better optioned out; but when you level the playing field with prices, I’d easily take this over an X5.

What struck me most about this review however was the stereo evaluation. A solid 10 out of 10. They said it sound as good as ML in the new LS and the Bang & Olufsen option in the A8; which they pointed out is a $6,300 option on a nearly $100K car. Being an audio enthusiast, I find this extremely impressive. Especially... especially, given that its produced by Panasonic.

I drove the Porsche, and the X5 on a racetrack right before and after I put the 2007 MDX thru its paces. We were timed and I had the best time with the MDX by far. Keep in mind that we were comparing 6 cyl. motors and despite great handling (for an SUV)the Cayenne had an absolutely anemic V6. The engineers were telling us that the MDX isnearly as quick as the normally aspirated Cayenne V8. I agree that SUV's are not "drivers" cars but these three come close.

I'm telling you, ya gotta drive the 07 MDX, it comes very close to feeling like a performance sedan because of the super handling AWD and the balance that it delivers. Plus the 300 hp motor has a great exhaust note. One thing though, the MDX's bragging rights are a little hollow at this point because we drove it against the 2006 X5 and not the 07. I'm looking forward to this comparison.
