Passat R36 Edges Closer

We finally have images of the production version of the upcoming Passat R36 from Volkswagen. From the images, it’s clear that the new car shares the same front end styling with the smaller R32 Golf and will come in both sedan and estate versions.

Sources state that the R36 will run an enhanced version of the 3.6L FSI V6 from the Touareg SUV, developing around 300bhp and mated to a DSG with 4Motion all-wheel drive. Styling was inspired by the Passat R-GT Concept, which first appeared at last year’s SEMA event in Las Vegas. The production version of the R36 should make its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March, and will be priced around the €40,000 mark.

I quite like the Vehicle Pictured above, however I am appalled with the Audi R8 Inspired Grilles on the Front Bumper, While it looks GREAT on the Passat, it does the R8 no Favour by sporting it. (£30k Vehicle with same Front Grills as £80k Vehicle)

People PLEASE STOP BEING IDIOTS. IT IS IDIOTIC TO CONVERT EURO PRICES INTO AMERICAN PRICES. WHY YOU ASK, EUROPEAN PRICES INCLUDE A 19% TAX IN THE PRICE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE VW GTI STARTS IN GERMANY @ 24,745 EURO, OR 31,728 DOLLARS, BUT HERE IT STARTS @ ONLY 22,100 DOLLARS. Please remember that. The VW Passat 3.4 4Motion with 280 hp here starts at 31,910 dollars. So let's think, if the Passat R36 would come here I think it would be reasonable to think that it would start at around 35,000. That is a great price.

Can you read. I said that it will possibly start at 35,000 or so if it ever came here. The bad Euro to Dollar exchange rate is what makes cars cost more there, plus the 19% added tax.

Will, you can't use spot rates to convert car prices. If anything, use a weighted average rate for the last couple of years...that is what auto companies use AS A FACTOR (not the only factor) in determining prices.

Check the balance sheets of any global automaker and look for foreign exchange losses...those only arise when there are NOT straight spot rate conversions for pricing...if auto prices were determined using your straight conversion method, there would be no exchange gains and losses.

Acutally, this model Passat isn't a rebadged Audi like the past models, they share a lot of parts yes, but the big difference is that the Passat has a Traverse-mounted engine (ie East-West layout) where the Audis have a North-South engine layout (hense why the Audis can use V8s, V10s (in the A6 and A8) or enven a W12 (in the A8 flagship) where the Passat only gets a V6.
